Dear Doctor,

Ive been playing a long time, but my compas really sucks,
i have these metronome, rons flamenco master , graf martiniez metronome, and various method books.

thing is doc i wake up and just noodle , cant seem to motivate my self to play with the metronome, im always playing scales and stuff, cant get myself into it, and im going to spain and want to get some lessons , i know they will say , your out of compas so bad !!! , any one got any detailed routine , i.e wake up clap along siple rhythms with metronome , or how to get the accents, im really finding it hard to get the inner pulse happening and ive been playing a while as said

That is the problem and will continue to be so until you can motivate yourself. There is no guitarist with a good sense of rhythm who does not work with a metronome.

You can join a group, but if they're good enough they'll expect you to do your homework and know your stuff, if they're not good enough you'll all confuse each other.

When you learn a new falseta look at it as a puzzle, fitting it into the compas to try and understand how the equation works. Everytime I learn something new I don't fully understand I do that: break it down, write the 1-12 above the notes and go through it with a flamenco metronome to make sure it works.

Only you can help yourself there, you wouldn't regret it either!

thats guys , yes John i mean im motivated i play 4 hours today, yet get the metronome going !!! darn it ill do it now instead of thinking about it ,

i recorded some playing and the compass is hirrfic so its metronomic madness , so on we go to rons flamenco master, and just going to stick with tientos and bulerias simple whythm.

cheers

Yeah mdj,

John is absolutely correct here.
A major part of the fun in Flamenco is weaving the notes into the rhythm.

I think this is a malady that affects a lot of guitarists who come from a Classical training.
They sort of fall in love with the tonality and sound of the melodies in Flamenco and some of the techniques, but have no real interest in the rhythm and just work to get it "passable" and no more.
On the other hand, some of the best foreign players I've heard come from a "rock" background.

Sadly, if you have no real love and enthusiasm for the rhythm, then you will be very unlikely to succeed as a good Flamenco guitarist IMO.

Here's a good example in my own case...
I totally loath driving and have no interest in cars.
I find it boring and tiresome and would rather take a bus or a train.
Hence I am just a "passable" driver on normal roads.

When I mentioned this to my driving instructor years ago he looked surprised and said "but don't you enjoy reading the road and adjusting for the problems ahead and enjoy the flowing and merging with the other traffic?"

I had to say not really, I just needed a licence for my job and shopping and stuff.

He said he really loved all that stuff as well as doing advanced driving courses and doing closed circuit driving at high speed and practicing on skid pans etc.

So that's why he'll always be an expert driver in all circumstances and I'll just be an ordinary Joe Public driver IMO.

To be a good all-round Flamenco guitarist you have to enjoy ALL the aspects of the music and not just pick bits here and there, I think.

I mean even Gerardo Nuñez can play really great straightforward "chord" backing for a dancer and it really, I mean really rocks!

cheers,

Ron

hey ron, i agree in fact straight down to the driving licence and the rock background,

when i played a lot of classical i was always attracted the the spanish impresionistic works , rodrigo, turina et al, and with Rock wheni first begun i remeber here when a rock/metal group would use the Phrgyian dominant mode (Thats as flamenco as !!!

i appreciate the advice the difference between this and driving is Flamenco is so great to me just for the love and passion of it , not to be the best or something.

I listened to Florians uploads for John , i noticed something , i can technically play alot of what was played, yet, muscially i have got the rhythmic Legs to swing on!! (stand on ) , so im going to put a way my serranito falsetas and try to get some duende with your Flamenco master , today i just memorized a brief compas for bulerias , the excitment when the compas swings , is amazing , i suppose from a classical backround we tend to dig deep into the sonority , as an off thing i remeber many people saying John Williams has little soul on his early recordings , i feel that he plays very strict in time, later he bends the time more, i was watching a video of him and Paco pena playing sevilla by albeniz, i am going to work on this essential musical aspect ... sorry to ramble

no wonder, the sound is mechanical, like a robot, i hate em..u need some compas track with a nice swing and palmas that inspires you..something that goes along with the music and feels like it belongs with what you are playing, who said that you cant have a litlle fun with practicing compas

try ritmo flamenco

thats true florian, but if paco uses them and a lot of you guys well thats it !!! i had better ,
mind you they sound like one of those old bat and ball games from the late 70's (First electronic tv games).

i am **** at maths i cant usually work out the beat !!! man im hopeless

honestly i find it really darn hard to tell what beat im on when listening to a recording, inner pulse is like where out the window !!! metronome madness here we come, i was using the graf martinez today, and i swear it skipped a few beats did my head in !!!

lol you re funny you remind me of this english student i have...the second i make him do a chord where the fingers arent imediatly near eachother on the frets or he dosent know the chord his voice goes up a pitch in an english accent " - Ouch IT HURTS FLORIANNNN "

quote:

honestly i find it really darn hard to tell what beat im on when listening to a recording, inner pulse is like where out the window

well a metronome wont fix that, theres no point playing straight if you dont know where you are..u have to find a way to learn ....sorround yourslef with nonstop flamenco as much as you can, in a car , work etc. whenever possible

Rons flamenco metronome is good for learning the counts cause as well as the accents it displays the count each beat falls on

dont skip between palos, do one at the time and stick with it, focus on it, read on it make sure you know the accents...work on a palo a month, listen to everything in that palo, practice palmas to it, try to count out loud with it..dont get up until you understand it ...soon enough the compas light will go on

its not a matter of you not beeing able to do it, its a matter of you not having paid enough attention to it perhaps or havent done it enough...everyone can

i hate maths too...and i am pretty sure that the gipsyes that came up with this werent inventing bulerias between solving equations

Since i have loops, i stopped playing against metronome. In fact, i sold my metronome 2 years ago, coz i used it 4 times or so. For me it is useless to have a "click". That says nothing to me, i can do that with my foot, dont need a metronome for it. But everybody is different, you just have to find a way to "get into" that feeling and make it your own.

But there is actually two parts of playing in rythm: feeling or technique. Need to check which one is lacking. You can check if you have the feeling to play a falseta if you try to sing it in rythm, exactly in rythm.

I just thought of something..

the teachers in our school have come up with a compas system for kids...try this

bulerias

PINAPLE apple apple PINAPLE apple apple PINAPLE apple PINAPLE apple TOMATO

just kidding..but they do use that system for kids..use flamenco metronome or something that shows you the count on screen at the same time

you play scales, but not with a metronome?

try playing your scales to the compas tracks as suggested, you will probably have to work out ways to fit them into compas, and you will learn a lot by doing it.

think of them as "falsetas" and try to include remates etc. ie. por solea, scale from 1-10 and remate 10,11,12, play around with things, be creative

that way you can practise your scales, technique, and compas, all at the same time. when you make mistakes, keep going, and improvise your way out of it somehow....
