Rasgueado?

I have a look at the CG Forum from time to time, as there are some interesting posts and good people.
Has anybody read the thread "Rasgueado"?
I hate to be critical, but....
What a lot of total tosh and misinformation.
Jeez, if there was ever a case for "Never believe anything you read on the Internet" LOL!
Still, I guess it's just a good natured discussion group, but I sure hope no one is going to base their next six months of practise on this info!

cheers

Ron

Hey, I wrote something on that thread. I told one of those guys that "abanico" refers to Gipsy King strumming, and not to "Marote" rasgeaduos, but I got shot down, so I shut up. I also had to correct Thor's counting :)

Well, all those guys are wrong anyway. All true flamencos know you play them with e (up), a (down), m (up), i (down), p (up).

Oh, and we also have the variant that is P (up), P (down), P (up), P (down), i (up), m (down), that we refer to as "Alzaqueado".

Funny you should mention that one Pat, I often use it when I'm totally drunk.

I thought the abanico is "the fan" triplet, is this what you mean?

No, they are the same thing, Mike. Abanico=Marote=fan=triplet ras. Basically, a ras produced as a result of forearm rotation, commonly played in tiplets with P completing two out of the three strokes, although as usual there are many variations.

The lack of conventions in flamenco often makes things (even more) confusing, yet you can find books or quality transcriptions where only one of these terms will be used exclusively, yet they are clearly talking about the same thing.

Eg Juan Martin calls it the triplet ras, the guy who transcribed Tomatito's stuff for the Encuentro video calls it abanico.

It's the last time I discuss terminology about flamenco. They can't even decide what flamenco is or is not... is Sevillanas or Farruca flamenco, what the heck is Solea por Bulerias...? You have to be a philologist to speak correctly about these things.
