Changing Tuners

I have a Burguet student guitar that I've been playing for about 10 years now. It's a decent guitar and serves its purpose well.

However, the tuning machines were probably never the best and now a couple of them are slightly bent, partially from an ill fitting case and also just from normal wear and tear.

If I were to purchase new tuning machines, are they something I could install myself (considering I have no experience) or would it be best just to pay some one to put them on?

Also, can anyone suggest some quality low to mid price machine tuners that I should look for?

As mentioned above, this is a student level guitar that's already over 10 years old so I don't need top of the line, just quality tuners that function well.

Here are two affordable options I've found so far...

Schaller at Luthier Music

Gotoh at Guitar Salon

Are these okay? Is one significantly better than the other?

most of these are good

the procedure is simple. remove strings, start unscrewing.

put new tuners in. screw in. take a pencil and rub it in the nut a little. restring. done.

not a big deal at all. probably only take you 20 minutes tops.

NeZ. Of the two you mention, I prefer the Gotoh.

Is the screw hole placing pretty standard on these? I'm not sure what brand are currently on my guitar and I definitely don't want to be drilling new holes.

I think the lyre style is longer than the hauser - I drilled a couple of very small pilot holes in my Bernal to guide the new screws.

In my case, the new Schaller tuners covered the old screw holes as they were longer - the other way around may leave the old ones showing, but I wouldn't fret about it.

Fret! Get it???? boom boom

You also need to check that the distance between the centres of the rollers will fit your headstock holes neatly without snagging.

I personally prefer the Gotoh´s in the same price level.
You can get other machine heads which are better, but they´ll cost you 3 or 4 times more
