First Post!

Hi guys,
This is my first post on this site, so glad i found it!
Ive been playing flamenco for about 10 months now and i really want to take it to the next level but im kinda stuck. I can play most of John H Clarke's music, you can find him on youtube but now im running out of tabs...

Can i ask for some links to some tabs, good modern artists where i can buy from or download free tabs from? Would be much appreciated!

I want to start making a extra income out of flamenco playing background music for restuarants and special events ect...

Hello Reinhardt and welcome. If you go to the tabs section on this foro you will find lots of stuff that members have generously shared for free.

Just kidding. If its what you want, go ahead. But thats not really flamenco. And learning that kind of stuff wont bring you further in learning real flamenco (techniques and form, basically). See, this is flamenco:

I dont know about your plans about restaurants and stuff. But its important to hear a difference between those recordings. If you want to get further in playing, there are several DVDs available. But first you want to be clear what you want to play. It doesnt help to recommend you stuff that actually isnt your type of music. Hence the links above.

Welcome to the foro Reinhardt.

Sorry if i come straight to the point but if you really want to learn flamenco, then simply forget what you have learned from John C.

Yes i know, millions of views, 1000s of 5 star ratings, but thats only because only few know what flamenco is.
And this foro is the right place if you want to belong to these few people

If you are happy with some spanish sounding hodgepodge, then its no problem, but this sort of music has nothing to do with flamenco. And i am not talking about modern or traditional flamenco (thats a different story).

So, first of all decide what you want and then decide which way you want to go.

Our way is the hard way but the right way

Thx for the quick response, Kinda Demorilsed my future on those comments but anyway. It was needed.
I know paco de lucia and his fast playing style lol, nothing to critize, but not everyone like the fastness he mostly plays,

John H Clarke has a little flamenco in his songs... ? anyway
I also like Armik, John Gilliat ect...and would love their tabs but cant seem to find any? but those players need a rythem beat while playing where John H Clarke does his own beat.

Im just a lost flamenco player seeking help so through any comment at me i need your knowledge plz

I live in South Africa and dont know anybody that plays flamenco here. So in about a years time i want to start making a living out of it, in a small coastal town.

Flamenco is and art form and will give you years of enjoyment and there is always something new to learn.
I recomend that you get a flamenco instructional book like Juan Martin's "El Arte Flamenco de La Guitarra" he has two volumes and he will explain the differences between Palos and contains most of the traditional flamenco pieces.
You will learn how to count the Flamenco way and the correct hand positions. From there the sky is the limit.
I am sure others can suggest other instructional books.
Need to star at the basics, do not cut corners.

If your seriously interested, try to get in contact with the people there. Thats often the only way to find flamenco guitarrists: somebody knows someone who heard of a guitarrist who plays flamenco in your town

and how often did it happen to me that those mysterious flamenco guitarrists turned out to be spanish classical guitar, jazz or latin guitarrists!

As for tabs of Armik, sorry i dont know. Just try google, but im shure there should be commercially available tabs of these musicians.
If you go to Johns homepage, you wont find the word Flamenco, he says "Nuevo Flamenco". This goes for Armik too. I just want to say: You have to be clear that this has nothing to do with flamenco. They say it themselves (implicite). Its influenced by flamenco. But flamenco sounds, looks and feels different. It appeals also to different people.
So in all respect, playing this stuff wont make you a flamenco player either.

Thx for the advice,
That nearest flamenco dance place is 1000km away from me :-/
Ive asked so many guitar places, classical guitar intructors ect and i just dont find anyone but someone wil probly pop up one day in the future. . . well ill probly call myself "Nuevo Flamenco" for now.

Sorry Reinhart I guess that was partly my fault. I think where I was coming from is that some of the guys on this foro (not me) have worked their butts off for years and years learning flamenco. They spend hours practising and their hard-earned dosh on lessons and upgrading their guitars. So the idea that someone might earn money for playing after just a few months might devalue all their work a bit.

But that was a bit judgemental of me so I apologise - after all I've never heard you play. So good luck to you. I'm probably just envious of your drive and enthusiasm!

Hey man no problem,
I actualy ment playing live after about a years time, stil need alot of prac, but i just guessed if i can play most of john clarkes music, edit it learn more stuff and then start performing live it will probly work, cuz alot of people like john's style of music, I edit his stuff alot and make my own songs from the base of his songs and then give him all the credit for it ofcourse. I also have a year end performance at the end of this year at my work, the people liked it alot but i only do it for experience for now.
I just need motivation to keep me going and learn new material...

I know what flamenco is and i know its hard and i know a few Traditional flamenco songs but not much.

I like to learn tabs and watch someone play it at the same time. That helped me alot with John Clarkes songs.

Anyways being on this forum, u guys giving me advice so quickly is already a big step for me, so im really glad.

Thanks alot appreciated a million times over!

if u upload a litlle sample of his style of music, i might be able to suggest other
players like him you could check out.

il make a list for you for recomended listening of some flamenco stuff too and email it...sorry i got a bitt on my plate atm...or even beter the members here can join in and make some suggestions for you...i understand that you like that guy it wont hurt to check out some different stuff also...u never know..might just find something new you love.

Ive checked out alot of other players, but for a noob like me its way better to learn tabs that has a movie file with ir or rather just a mp3 file.

Spanish guitar and "flamenco" guitar are two different things. The guys you are into are not flamenco players. Most flamenco players consider the music you like "cheesy". It sounds snobby I know, but it is not about "speed" that makes the musical differences. It is more like the difference between JOHN COLTRANE and KENNY G, and describing both as jazz saxophone masters. Hope you can understand the analogy there.

I am sure you can search the net and find what you need, but it is totally different genre of guitar playing you are after. Probably best not to call it or YOURSELF "flamenco" but just call it spanish guitar. Good luck with playing out.
