M-A Cortés, E. Maya, Habichuela nie...

A few months ago Pimientito wrote about an event in Granada where he had got a flamenco overdose. Kate was there too. I can't find that thread (it might have been during the Lost Months of Foroflamenco) but here's some video from that event, recently posted by a helpful person in Latvia.

This was the concert in honour of (in the yellow scarf) one of the grandmothers of the Granada scene. A lot of great musicians participated in what was, by all accounts, a marathon session.

There are just a few videos up so far, but they may be of interest, there's good stuff there. I recommend you start with the Soleá por bulerias, danced by Vero La India accompanied by Emilio Maya and Juan Habichuela Nieto.

The guitarist for Estrella (doing her diva act ) and Marina Heredia, is Miguel Angel Cortés.

That thread was called "flamencoed out" Actually Kate didnt make it to that concert which i know she was annoyed about.
I tried to find it but it must have been deleted becuase the concert was in May, which is a shame because I wrote a long article and now the writtten record of that concert has been lost.
Thanks for posting the videos Steve. I had no idea they were on the net.
Just to say that I got my concert poster back from the frame shop last week. The line up is incredible. I remember the concert went on for 4 and a half hours in total....and apart from the stuff in the videos like"la India" and Estrella morente there was also spots by Montse Cortes, Enrique morente, Juan Andres Maya, Ivan Vargas, Marina Heredia, a duo with Juan Habichuala nieto and Maya on violin, Plus 30 mins of Tomatito.... Pepe habichuela, Manolete, el paquete, Miguel angel Cortes...lots of others....and half the albaicin in the audience too. It was a night of incredible flamenco whith about half of the most important artists in the flamneco world all together on one stage.
I'll make a jpg of the poster to post on this thread.

Here's an article ( in Spanish but with some great photos) about the homenaje
http://www.deflamenco.com/revista/pagina.jsp?codigo=1977

Pimiento's right I wasn't there, I'd gone to London that week and was very pi**ed off. Still I have good memories of various encounters with Loles. One night at a family celebration in El Rocio as she sat fanning herself, sweating after a night of performing in the tablao, I asked her why on earth she was still working at her age. "Ay" she said "I cant afford to retire on what they pay me ".

This may well have been true knowing the wages in the Sacromonte but I know it was also because flamenco was her life. Her daughter La Porrona, also a flamenco dancer, has a bar in Plaza Larga where you can see pictures of Loles with Bill Clinton. He looks quite scared !! Both Loles and la Porrona were there with Estrella when Harold did that recording of them in the caves of the Sacromonte.

Another time we were having lunch in la Higuera when the flamencos all arrived after playing a football match. I know, flamencos playing football I cant quite imagine but anyway it seemed like every flamenco from the neighbourhood arrived and the party lasted till dawn the next day. Loles was there and I was stunned when she danced. I had never seen anything like it as she arched her back and let her long hair sweep the floor. She was probably in her 70's even then.

Last week I saw La India, her grand daughter dance, she is quite incredible. Its good to know that the next generation is waiting in the wings.
