Flamenco in Andalucia in October??

hey folks, I will be going to Andalucia from 1st Oct - 9th Oct.
I will be staying in a remote area with some friends who just want to spend the week chilling, however, we will be staying about an hour from Granada and I think I will be taking our hire car and driving to the city in search of culture and flamenco.

Is there anything going on that week that any of you locals know about?

Stu

Hey Stu

Well, I think the Bienal de Flamenco en Sevilla will still be on at that time. Its about the biggest festival you´ll find anywhere. Normally 2 shows a day throughout a month. I know it might be far from you, but since you havent said where you are, I thought I´d mention it, also because Ed could maybe use the facts

Did you get the loop I send you?

Hey Stu,

A remote place, that'll be the Alpujarras then. Just a guess but if you are up in the mountains it is very beautiful. I know people who go up there and have not come back down for years.

There is always an Autumn Flamenco Festival in Granada but not sure of exact dates yet. There is sure to be a few things going on here, there usually is Monday nights El Niño at the Upsetter, sunday night concerts at the Eshavira, Saturday nights at La Chumbera and stuff happening at the Peña Platería.

Let us Granainos ( that's me and Pimiento) know when you are in town and we can meet up.

Kate

Hi Kate

Have you ever been to Huescar? Thats remote and makes Alpujarras look like your nearest shopping centre.

Thanks Val! !!
We (that's my wife, me and a befriended couple; I'm the only serious aficionnado)probably won't make it to Alhaurín as I've worked out an itinerary that's sort of like what we Europeans like to make fun of when Americans tour over here (i. e. "What's today? Thursday? Gee, I guess we're in Paris, France").
I'm already planning to spend a week or two next spring or fall on my own (with guitar) though, and find you're homepage interesting in that respect ...

Gracias Anders. I find the
programme tends to choreographed shows/evennts Also, I don't know most of the artists ...
(Anybody heard of SARAY DE LOS REYES at the peña "LA FRAGUA" ?)

Hey Kate, I have just found out that we are actually staying about 2hrs from Granada in Carratraca, however this won't stop me from coming to Granada.
I will hopefully try to come on the 3rd/4th Oct (early morning) and stay the day and possibly eve. I'll PM you guys closer to the time and see if its possible to meet up. I am hoping to get in touch with Jingle too who I understand is now in Granada working with Emilio. Ailsa gave me his contact details and some info after her visit/studies with him. My plan is to try and do something similar later this year or next year and thought it might be cool to try and meet him this time round. Not sure if this will be possible though.

Anyways, yes Anders I got the loop. Thanks mate. I cant remember if I replied by email.

Have no idea where Carratraca is but will look on map. Jingle is still in Nerja though yes there was talk of coming to Granada but it has not happened yet. Will ask Emilio if he knows what's happening with that.

See you in October then :)

Hi Stu. I hope that you come and look us up in Granada. Jingle was lined up to teach at Emilios school but due to some logistical difficulties will still be in Nerja for the foreseeable future and certainly wont be in Emilios school until after new year.

BTW - are you now Stu "Manzmann - formerly the member known as Stu - formerly the member known as Manzmann" Manzmann?

Yes thats me. I am actually gonna get my user name changed to Stu again. Manzmann was a joke name from my friend. It was supposed to be a German version of my real surname, Mansell. However someone pointed out that it kinda sounds like "Mans man" which could mean a couple of things, neither of which would are true.

I looked it up on the map. You are close to Malaga. Why dont you go to Malaga or Alhaurin or somewhere else in that region. Granada is beautifull romantic etc. but IMHO, its not a flamenco bigcity. (sorry Granada folks) There are many other places which are more lively. I mean, you can go to Jerez or Sevilla as well. Its the same distance and Moron is closer.

Anders..I've lived 5 years in Malaga and 2 years in Granada. I can say catagorically that I have seen 10 times as much flamenco in Granada in 2 years as I have in the whole time I was in Malaga. The thing with the Malaga scene is that its easier to find. You can go to the peña flamenca, you can check out www.flamenka.com and find out whats happening.....but the number of musicians/artists/ guitarreros etc. from Malaga is relatively small and the emphasis is on coplas, fandangos, malagueña etc.

The Granada scene is much bigger but also much harder to find. It tends to be in underground clubs and hidden corners of the Albaicin. You need to know people who can show you the scene to see good flamenco and thats why its good to contact people who live there

But come on...... please dont say that the town of Lorca, Carmen Amaya, the Morentes, the Habichuela dynasty, Ketama, the Heredias, the Mayas and the Granada guitar school isnt flamenco!!

RE: Flamenco in Andalucia in October?? (in reply to Stu

Dont get me wrong Pimiento and I´m not trying to let Granada down.

Manzman will be staying very close to Malaga. Thats why I said he could go to Malaga, where he will find good authentical flamenco.

He will be staying in between Sevilla, Granada and Jerez and to be honest in this competition Granada will loose, especially because Sevilla is having the Bienal de Flamenco this time of the year.

I lived 6 years in and around Granada and in Granada there´s a big tendency IMHO to make everything bigger than it is. It includes Flamenco. I find it to be a relatively small and enclosed scene. I didn´t fit into it (And I´m not the only one) and outside very few things happened.

Another thing is that Granada is an extremely beautifull and charming city always worth a visit, but if I wasn´t living here, but visiting and staying where Stu will be staying and I would like to see some flamenco, I would go elsewhere. Thats why I write this. Another thing is if Stu or anyone else wants to hang out with some Foro members (and maybe see some flamenco), then Granada is most probably the best spot.

The Bienal de flamenco in Seville looks incredible. I just checked the listings. Sure, thats got to be thing to see this year and the Bienal de Malaga is next year.

I accept your point, the Granada scene is more enclosed and more private...but it is still very much there. I guess its down to personal experiences and luck. I have been lucky to get into the scene there , meet some great artists and see some great concerts. I know that I would not have seen half that stuff without being taken by other flamencos and similarly I know that many visitors who look for "authentic flamenco" in Granada come away saying there isnt any, because they have not been introduced or made the right flamenco connections.

If anyone is thinking of visiting we will try to out whats happening here around that time. Many things happen at short notice so its pointless saying "I'm thinking of coming over in January..whats going on then?" Some of the best things I have seen, I heard about with 24 hours notice...thats just the way it is here!

Hey guys,

Thanks again, yes Anders I did notice that I'm very close to Malaga too but, as I said I kind of thought it would be fun to visit Granada and try and say hi to a few foro members. I also thought jingle would be there as I hoped to try and arrange a meet with him. I also wanted to see the Alhambra amongst other sites!!

Correct me if I'm wrong but is there a big british community in malaga?
I always associated Malaga with british ex pats and trashy british tourists getting very, very drunk and being fools. or am I thinking of marbella? or perhaps it was magaluf

I think you have the best of all excuses to go to Granada... To have fun and hang out. Because this you do the best in Granada. Have a couple of drinks and some tapas and a lot of fun.

You could always get the bus to Nerja just along the coast from Malagae and see Jingle before getting another bus to Granada.

If you want to get into the Alhambra it is best to book in advance online as they can sell out of tickets on the day. They keep 30% back to buy on the day but you have to get up early and queue to get these and the time slot given to get into the Nazarine Palace may not be till much later in the day.

Folks, you have been most helpful, all the places you speak of sound just as appealing really.

I wanna visit all of them!!! and perhaps I will....

quote:

Stu - don't forget Fuengirola Feria - one of the biggest and best in the region - should be on around 6th -12th October. There'll be something there for everyone, so your non-flamenco friends would have a good time.

Hey Val thanks for this info! Fuengirola feria sounds good and the timing sounds perfect! Ill look into that.

quote:

quote:

Trashy British tourists tend not to be much into Flamenco! Lots of ex-pats in the area, sure - although perhaps not so many in Malaga itself, which, incidentally is a most beautiful city with lots to see.

The town where I have a place has lots of English. There's even an English bar up my street where the drunks roll home loudly late at night. On the other hand, I think there are 3 English members of the local Peña and I'm one of them. After a good night, I regularly witness our Spanish members

quote:

getting very, very drunk and being fools

haha! I hope I didn't come across like I don't like people having fun and getting drunk. I was just afraid I was gonna end up in the wrong part of town with crazy binge drinking brits, Ibiza style, football fan type culture!! you know the sort?!

Anyways thanks again. are you still doing the guitar course val???

Phew,

the last couple of days have been quite stressfull:
our friends sister is seriously ill, and she wasn't sure she could leave.
my sister-in-law's dachshound got a slipped disk, so she isn't able to house- (and dog-) sit for us...
Luckily things have worked out.
So (barring incidents) we'll be on our way on the 14th
