Flamenco history of San Francisco Ba...

Here is an article about some of the history of flamenco in San Francisco.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/02/24/CM55UOCEI.DTL

It was nice to see these people, many of who I played with, studied with, or simply watched perform and was inspired by, recognized.

Florian, if you are there, read this article. It talks a lot about your friend Martirio. It'll give you an idea of how famous she is in Spain.

I have to disagree with this though
"I like a good show," said Whalen, "but not psychodrama and, for me, you've failed if everybody doesn't want to f- you after a performance. "

I cant think of any flamenco singers I would want to f- never mind how brilliant their performance. Of course its easier if you are aguy as there are a lot of gorgeous wfemale cantaoras.

And am not sure the bathrooms have improved that much but maybe I should hang out at better places !

For those of you out there in the Bay area enjoy Son de la Frontera. Great band.

Kate

Too bad Gary Hayes wasn't in there. I think he started out in San Francisco?

There were some people left out like Mariano Cordoba, Rosa Montoya, Cruz Luna, Ernesto Hernandez, Isa Mura, etc. who were huge in SF flamenco history. There was a great photo from the 60's in the article of David Serva dancing while Ben Flores played. Ernesto was in the photo as well, as well as I believe Isa Mura. My friend Jorge Liceaga, a fine player from Mexico, and the singer Patricia Velasquez, were featured in a few photos as well. It was nice to see them get some recognition.

I'm not real sure if Gary Hayes spent a lot of time here-I've never heard of him performing here in the past. I did get to meet him several years ago. He was down here with Luis Agujetas. I think he had just completed a cd with him.
