Tangos vs. Rumba? 
So, when you don't have the distinctive palmas or the strumming patterns that distinguish one or the other, how can one tell them apart - what are the major differences (particularly with more modern stuff)?

I think the main difference in rhythm is that tangos is played with two upbeat accents (beats two and four, a bit like rock music) and rhumba has one (the second beat when played with a two in the bar feel).

Tangos normally touches on the phrygian mode VERY often ( ie A7 Bb back and forward ) with SHORT digressions to the full andalucian cadence (Dm C Bb A) .where rhumba can be in a major or minor key or will approach the phrygian mode via the cycle of fifths (ie Em Am D7 G C B7) minor blues is also common in rhumba (ie Dm Am E7 Dm).

Modern tangos when played very fast sometimes uses with the accentuation of Rhumba.

Farruca is like Rhumba slowed down where the heavy two beat gives the music a lot of gravity. I have farruca played more lightly with the rhythms of bossa nova (accents on the fourth semiquaver of each beat).

I would reccomend Oscar Herrero's book on Tangos which has lots of short examples to practice.

All of the rules above are general and frequently broken.
