Kate and Ailsa in Cabo de Gata

Dave and I met Kate and Harold last Sunday in Cabo de Gata, for a really loooooooooong lunch, like only the Spanish can do. Kate and I shared a fantastic paella. Afterwards we went for a walk along the beach. The water was warm and the sunset beautiful.

With all this talk about cats, I thought it funny to be at a place called "The Cape of Cats"....but on checking, I don't think "gata is the feminine form of "gato".

Maybe Kate or someone can help here (as I am trying to help my daughter with her school Spanish).

Would you normally refer to a female cat as a "gata"?
Or a female kitten as a "gatita"?

If not would you use "El Gato Negro" or "La Gato Negra" ?

Would this be the same with things like "Perro/Perra" etc ?

These are the kind of obscure details that you don't really find in books.

cheers,

Ron

Hi Ron

A female cat would be una gata but cant say I'd know a male cat from a female on. Un gatito is kitten but here they use the diminutive so much that almost all cats get called gatito.

Cabo de Gata must mean Cape Cat. I'd not thought about that but el Cabo de Buen Esperanza is the Cape of Good Hope :)

And Manzmann definitely too cold to swim, we were there at sunset. May have been ok at mid day ( 2 o'clock Spanish time) as the sun would at least have warmed you up when you got out. My brother in law swam there just before Christmas. Mad Englishman that he is. In the photo you see Ailsa wears a summer dress, I've got on jeans, thick jumper and jacket !!!!

I got some great shots of the desert that day with my new camera so will post some as soon as I've downloaded them.

Kate

Thanks Kate,
A definition of "gata" I saw was to "walk or crawl on all fours", so I wasn't sure.

I agree with what you say about cats in general, (lets face it, ALL cats look like pencil sharpeners from behind! ), but what I was meaning was that if you SPECIFICALLY knew the animal was female, as in the case of an owner or a vet.

As I said, you don't see this stuff in books.

cheers,

Ron
