Flamenco in Madrid

Hi all
a flamenco-appreciating friend of mine is going to madrid and wants to take some friends for an authentic flamenco experience, ie a pena as opposed to a tourist tablao.
can anyone recommend anywhere or provide some insider tips??
Gracias!

Tell them to try La Solea and Triana bar - both on Cava Baja. It's best to go late (after 12) If they are lucky they will hear some excellent cante. If they want dancing, then I would highly recommend Las Carboneras on Plaza Conde de Miranda. It is a show that attracts a lot of tourists but Falo sings here every night and the standard is very high. There are also clubs/bars that have flamenco on different nights. At the moment, I can think of The Contra Club (Calle Bailen on a Tuesday), also El Juglar in Lavapies - Sundays and Wednesdays. Wednesday often has Curro de Jerez playing. Will let you know if anything else comes to mind. Karenanne

Here's a good link
http://www.gomadrid.com/activity/madrid-flamenco.html

Their first suggestion is Casa Patas which I would recommend but also try going to EL Flamenco Vive, the flamenco shop and ask them there as they are all aficioandos. Whenever I have been to Madrid I have been dragged from one flamenco bar to the other without knowing where the hell I was most of the time. Calle Echegary is a good street with things happening but I know there is a whole lot more, finding them is all part of the experience.

Yes, there is El Burlandero on Echegaray - only plays CDs but usually good ones. Also Cardamomo that has a jam session which used to be on Wednesdays but I think is now about midnight Tuesday. A shame that Los Gabrieles ( the place with the great tiles) is now being totally reconstructed as an American hotel. And Jovenes Flamencos has gone too. Don't suppose you know where the owner, Arturo, has gone Kate? Would love to see him again. Karenanne
