RE: Grisha, what's that on your guitar? (in reply to Jim Opfer)

Augustino LoPrinzi does that on some of his guitars too. In some ways its a compromise with the unconventional soundhole placement of Mike Kasha. (Kasha is a physicist at Florida State U who worked with a luthier and used an oscilloscope and a lot of experimenting to redesign bracing, bridge, soundhole placement and top thickness to maximize volume and optimize balance between bass and treble. The result almost certainly had the most punch and volume of any nylon-strung acoustic guitar in existence, and the best balance, too. His guitars are rare, legendary, and quite valuable because not many were made -- because his luthier died, plus they weren't popular because of their unconventional appearance, having an oval soundhole in the right side of the upper bout, and some models had a second soundhole where Grisha's is. Plus the bridge is asymmetrical.) LoPrinzi's guitars and Grisha's at least look normal from the front, so there is less resistance to that more inconspicuous innovation. Playing a guitar with a hole there is like being in front of the instrument. And they are louder for the audience, too.
