Anyone heard of the Flamenco guitarist Luis Maravilla? I myself had not. But if what I read is true, then he has played with and accompanied many great musicians. Below is a link to an interview with him. Its at the bottom of the webpage under the title "Letters from the Flamenco mailing list".

One quote that stood out was:

"I agree that the music is lost when the melody is lost. Of course, rhythm in music is fantastic, marvelous- but it's not everything. Doesn't the melody count for something?"

Not sure what to make of that.

I think it's silly to try to make either rhythm or melody king. Why not have both? Or rhythm in some falsetas and melody in others? Variety is the salsa of life...

Agreed. I think a balance is needed. for me rhythm without melody is boring, and vise versa is probably equally true. But, IMO, when you get both tight rhythm and strong melodies together, thats when it hits you... "pow!"
