Words of wisdom from Phillip Hii

In this age of Juan Martin the third greatest guitarist and Esteban the best of all; and guys who have been playing for six month giving advice, let us listen to some words of wisdom....

RE: Words of wisdom from Phillip Hii (in reply to Miguel de Maria

Philip Hii made quite a slash in the classical scene with his debut recording "Bach: new transcriptions for guitar" including the dm Tocatta and fugue everyone knows from the version for organ. His basis for that transcription was the argument that it was most likely an violin work as well as an organ work (since Bach did his fairly often and it fits stylistically). Personally, I think he plays the Barrios "allegro" a little too fast. You kinda loose the great bass and 'Bach like' melodic content at that pace. It should be a bit more reflective imho.

Writing BS and being a good guitarist dont exclude each other

@sean: LA CATEDRAL, "ALLEGRO SOMNE" IS MY FAVORITE PIECE !!! And yes I think youre right, he played it way too fast. Its not that he plays it unclearly, the notes are precise and no buzzing, but its just not enjoyable, when its that fast.

BS? How weird, Deniz, that you can so easily dismiss the words of someone who has forgotten so much more about the guitar than you most likely will ever know.

Sorry that I judge the words by its content, and not by the person who states it, his hair color, his income, his social status, whether I "like" it/him or not... I mean, dont you still get what I am trying to point at???

If PdL says something that is BS, then it remains BS, even if he is PdL.

Ps: and sorry, I thought your post was meant ironically, otherwise I wouldnt have responded.
Ps2: the first "sorry" was meant ironically, the scond not.

(Its funny: as long as you have the power/authority/status or whatever, you can state anything and the people will follow you like sheeps. The same idea (like that poem) presented by an unemployed for example only gains laughes. I find this mechanism weird)

Yes, I get you, Deniz... You have the ability to judge truth without knowing anything at all. An amazing thing! You know more about engineering than an engineer, more about science than a scientist, and more about music than a musician. What a wondrous talent to be able to cut through BS without the benefit of any knowledge? Your faith in yourself is truly incredible. This is the probably the most blatantly ignorant attitude I have ever encountered on the net, and that is saying something!

RE: Words of wisdom from Phillip Hii... (in reply to Miguel de Maria

Ok, keep on judging me on superficial factors. I could still give you reasons why I think that poem is completely ****, as I often have given you reasons, but you are never satisfied. You always turn it into a question of authority; hence, any discussion with you is useless (a serious discussion on a TOPIC), unless... haha well, unless you are someone who is respected by you.

Not my position is ignorant. Your position is ignorant because you are able to ignore everything said and try to critisize the person more than his opinions, not based on arguments, but on moral attitude.

To sum it all up in one sentence: Right or wrong is not a question of the person, who states it, but a question of the reasons and explanations he can give for it.

What you dont want to understand is, that a Taxi driver can very well explain the theory of relativity whereas a physician would stand in front of you and make "blubb"...
This is possible, even if its not probable.
The point here in this poem is a bit different. I know highly enough about instincts, to tell if it is a good idea to "follow them".

Ps: If it is really a problem of knowledge, then you could EASILY solve this problem, by saying which information would be necessary, and which Im lacking of, that prevents me to state that something is right or wrong.
But you dont, because you dont want to talk on a subject, but more to morally demolish me, who dared to try a rational discussion, and ONLY based on rationality, apart from authorities.

Ps2: Claiming I wouldnt know anything at all is wrong as well as if I would claim of knowing everything, which I never did. But again, this is not a question of knowledge. If so, you would have answered differently.

Some of the threads have been, well, somewhat comical lately. Thanks for the entertainment guys...I've managed to learn a few things, like...

quote:

and guys who have been playing for six month giving advice, let us listen to some words of wisdom....

...I didn't know you had to wait till you've played for seven months to give advice.

This reminds me of a funny quote/definition I read somewhere a while ago

"A person who is 'highbrow' is often someone who is educated beyond their intelligence"

Kinda of funny, but oh so true sometimes. Heck ... that might even be me! :)

Ok Miguel, I'll make it very easy now:

Lets say you heard PdL talking BS in an interview or whatever, and you can provide rational reasons, WHY it IS BS what he has stated there. Next day you meet him on street, how do you react?

1. "Oh Paco, your soo wise... everything you say is so right, I love you!"

or

2. "Dear Mr. Lucia, you're a cool guitarist, but in your last interview you have made the following mistake..., because [those rational reasons] ..."

If its No.1 you pick then go for it. If No.2, then what are you talking about here still?!

Hey Deniz, I am still waiting for your video upload of JM's rumba. Don't tell me you were talking **** without any backup!

Hm, I want to hit or shake your head very hard for this statement, but its ok lol. Just think about my **** one moment longer ok?

HEY SHROOMY! Here you go my friend! :

To bad you think it is BS, because alot of what he said are my exact sentiments that I make on the internet over and over. Especially the stuff about giving and recieving advice, keeping open to learn from any source, take what you need for yourself, etc.

I do think that some of this back and forth of miguel and deniz is childish.

Might be that there are some right points in it, Ricardo. I was only referring to the words I quoted.
Hm, childish, maybe. At the end it all boils down to the question I made up in the last post. Right or wrong that's all what counts, apart from agreeing or not agreeing.

Again, I apologize for posting in this thread. I thought "wisdom" was meant ironically by Miguel; it was dumb and optimistic from me. Otherwise I wouldnt have responded.

I agree Ricardo. I learned early on not to bother arguing with a teacher or someone you asked for help. Take what they have to offer, sort out what you want and store away the rest. More often than not, you end up using the stuff you ignored later on anyway, once you have the expreience to understand it. Conversley, sharing what you know is (whether right or wrong) is a great way to force your self to re-evaluate your own thoughts.

This isn't funny Deniz. I'm starting to doubt. Are you playing flamenco . Or better: are you playing guitar uberhaupt ?

POST IT and afterwards shake anybody's head.

RE: Words of wisdom from Phillip Hii (in reply to Miguel de Maria

I was in Vancouver for a week, enjoying this beautiful gem of a city...

Anyways, as far as this thread, all I'll say is I've learned a lot more from experts than from cab drivers or students. Also that it's a bad policy to discount the advice of Paco de Lucia, Phillip Hii, or Nobel Prize winners in their areas of expertise.

One thing I've learned through the internet is that anyone can claim to be an expert. In this strange world, students may argue with as much internal logic as masters (although I have not seen it), but without proof, it means nothing.

koella, did you thought that was me in the video? If so you were wrong, dude!
That was just a video somebody recommended me. It was meant ironical when I posted it, and I even had the freedom to post it here in a thread before, called "Flamencore" or something.

Anyways, sometimes even my patience has an ending (regarding the "Shroomy"-topic), so I posted it of frustration. Forgive me!

To give a closing note to the topic, quoting Miguel:

"...but without proof, it means nothing." (or to be very precise: it dosnt meant nothing, it does mean something, but it "only" has not been prooved as right or wrong)
