Flamenco and the "addictive&quo...

A few things have made me think about this...
The recent one being that Edgar saying that he smokes tobacco.
I know ToddK does too (sometimes enhanced )

Goddam, I've been trying to give up smoking for the last 10 years or so, with no success.

I think this is a personality thing.

(I mean, really..when it gets down to it... I don't really actually care if I die.. enough to make me give up.. )

Ricardo stated in a previous post that he reckons he has an "addictive" personality too, so that's why he stays away from stuff.

On alcohol, I like a few pints...but if I'm having a good conversation with friends over the table and there's no work the next day, I'll happily get plastered!

One thing seems to bind us all though...

That is each of us tends to have a side which is very disciplinarian and very hard working and another that couldn't give a toss.
Another trait tends to be folk who are mainly pacifists and abhor violence and have no interest in being conned by politicians etc...we seem to be able to switch to a different world and get out of it all..

This is something I don't really see in other folk who do humdrum jobs and live moderate lifestyles of getting higher in their careers and buying the right house and car and going out each weekend to buy more consumer stuff, while I've spent all that Sunday afternoon playing and listening to the same falseta and still totally pissed of with what I'm doing.

It's a curious mix of Rebel/Strict Disciplinarean that you don't find in any other general walks of life.

Another great example is Simon, who worked in a crazy pro Rock band, ended up working as a top engineer for Microsoft, then giving it all up, moving to a little village in Andalucia, but still remaining passionate and focussed...

I think the same would go for Singers and Dancers to a certain extent.

But I think guitarristas are a breed of their own, in my experience.

Half crazy and half the most intelligent and disciplined folk I've met.

Anybody else want to own up to their weaknesses?

cheers

Ron

Well Ron. Took me some time, but I think I discovered the hidden message.
Correct me if I'm wrong. But I think your question is : "Are there any alcoholics on this forum ? "

I'm not. Though I'm a wino. But, like you say, working days are hard when you have drunk too much the night before.
For the rest I show all the signs of obsessive behaviour: smoking, playing guitar too much, too much internet etc.

The rebel/discipline contradiction fits me too. When I'm on sth. that interests me, it's got to be perfect. When it doesn't (insurance, pension, taxpaying ) they got to drag me

LOL Koella!

Well...no..that's not exactly my question...

I find that I'm quite compulsively disciplined in various areas in life.
I really think I'm at the stage where I could let it all go and just live in a single roomed , whitewashed bloody hut with a bed and a table and chair and some facilities for cooking and I'd be pefectly happy, so long as I had my guitar and record collection!

cheers

Ok well first I will say that my band guitar and music in general is what has kept me from going of the deep end. I used to drink a lot but now I've slowed down. Ive learned for me that guitar is a personal journey and it keeps me from being a looser drug addict.

I've gone through some rough **** but guitar has always been something that I could do well, while everything else was falling apart. It is such an obsession that it has destroyed some relationships and a marriage.

I spend more time alone than I realize and then I look for compliments when all the solitary work is completed. I've been diagnosed with severe anxiety maybe bi-polar what ever. And I refuse to take medication for something that gives me the determination to practice hard.
I think I'm so afraid of dying young like my father that music is my subconcious way of being immortal. There is a quality to being so passionate and driven for one thing but it is also some kind of disease I'm sure of that.

It seems like everyone knows what I should do with my music. Hey Gabriel you should do more shows, you should be signed you should be touring the country you should play this you should do a show with so and so bla bla bla bla bla .

Maybe I'm weird but I enjoy my own music and guitar is something that goes deeper for me than any one will ever understand. I could have one song that nobody likes but for me it has some kind of hidden meaning and memmory trigger for old times and lessons learned. There is a much bigger picture for a musicians song than a listener will ever understand. I just think guitar is my personal war against everything else that has almost killed me Physicaly and emotionaly.

I think musicians and artists dancers are amazing people. Why because we can spend hours alone studying and be perfectly content without any body around. While most feel lost and confused without someone to talk to and hold there hand.

I feel alone and like my personal musical journey and know one can take it from me.

And yes I have an addictive personality it almost killed me 6 years ago.(clean ever since)

I would love to run away with my guitar and never be seen again.

And what do I find when I get here? Dr. Robert, guitarist of "The Blow Monkeys" and Yoof, bassist in "Killing Joke", got here before me. Kate's partner (up the road in Granada) was "10 Years After"'s sound engineer and played with Jim Capote.

It is a quest Ron, with many forks in the road but there are no right or wrong turns. I quite fancy making quality porn movies for example

And, yes. I am a very addictive personality - smoke, drink and love.

My uncle Egon is a certified alcoholic. He's been in and out of rehab (at the taxpayer's expense, might I add!). He often swears he'll never drink again, but always does. its a real shame because he was a successful carpenter, with a family, car, a house, etc. And now its all gone due to alcohol. his wife left him, his daughter (my cousin) lives with his (ex) wife, the car and house got repossessed, and he lost his job. For a while, he was even sleeping rough on a park bench. Occasionally we get a phonecall asking to borrow some more money (only this time he'll pay it back! ). To be honest, the guy is lucky to still be alive.

But its remarkable how little sympathy he gets from my family. We occasionally lend him a bit of money (which undoubtedly goes on alcohol), and thats about it. I guess if you want to overcome an addiction, you have to really want it for yourself, and other people can only do so much.

I think the addictive gene runs in my family. My main addiction music. I only wish PRACTISING my various instuments was the addiction, that way I might actually be good one of them by now. for me, its LISTENING to music. Which seems quite selfish, now that I think about it because its like I'm "using" the artists for personal gratification. I mentioned in one of my posts that I found the "duende" feeling addictive, and this is true. Although I can apply variations of duende to other genres of music, and get a similar feeling.

In a way, music could be considered very similar to drugs: they give you pleasure, can be costly with your money and time. And sometimes they become an obsession that your life becomes based around.

Well, I guess its better to be addicted to Flamenco and music than alcohol or crack cocaine! Its less anti-social, at least!

I'd rather be on guitar than on drugs any day.

If i drink any it´s on Friday or Saturday. Usualy vine. My favorite "Tv diner" is Gunniess/whiskey and dark choccolate but thats on weekends or holidays.

Being hungover isn´t to nice when you get older. when i was 21-23 it was fine now at 31 it ruins the whole day so im much more carefull. Gunniess is a bit more expensive here than "normal" beer but i prefer to pay more and get what i like than drinking a **** load to get pissed bla blaa blaaaa

Flamenco cocaine wiskey and cigars. yehhhhhhhhhhh

well thats what I've heard, and many male dancers prefer the same sex.

So what.

I'm gonna get in trouble for saying that.
But lets face it some of the best musicians in the world were(are)on DRUGS.
And some of the best dancers I've seen were to my suprise gay.

I'ts hard to be accepted into Flamenco but it is also one of the most accepting styles in the world.
Anybody from any race can play Flamenco and be accepted if they work hard.

Well just not tattooed metal heads like me. hahahahahahahaa
