The celebration of the individual in...

In the arts of the Asian countries are like those in the West. They celebrate both the individual and the collective interests of the culture. One of the keys to understanding how this operates is to differentiate between secular and non secular works. Religious traditions don’t drive art production or are a definitive factor in the conception of art works through the centuries.

Here are some examples, in Japanese literature the centering of an individual as a non religious subject the first writing that we look at as a proto novel happens about 1000 years ago in the Heian court. The main book recognized as the early form of a novel is the famous Genji Monogotari- The Tale of Genji.

The second example would be in Chinese painting which stressed the cultivation of cultural skills blended together in poetry, painting, connoisseurship, commentary and scholarship. Paintings by individual artists were highly prized and collected by upper classes. There were artists and poets who had competitive relationships often trying to outdo one another.

This is a portraiture of Lady Murasaki, the author of Tale of Genji

This illustrates the emphasis on the individual’s achievements via portrait.

This is one of my favorite painters, it’s Toyo Sesshu, a monk who studied in Chinese around the late 1400’s his dates roughly coincide with the Italian sculptor Donatello. In 1993 I went to the monastery Sesshu-san studied in and spent the night. It was after taking a wild ‘chicken bus’ ride through rural areas in a lightning storm.

Sesshu is a figure in art who is like Donatello because during his lifetime he was lauded as a great secular artist and an artist who lived religiously by example.

Some of those colors don’t work. Is seppuku an option for these artists, much like our noble gang of Grunge musicians, to save face?

Genji: “he who gets around”.

Color is personal, like fandangos. Can I interest you in some mauves and ultramarine blues?

We learned about karma on the other thread. If you don’t comport yourself with grace and dignity with respect for others, Escribano shuts the gate. Karma lesson *boom*

I’m entertaining the idea reincarnation is partly real, every time I think it’s safe to go back into the waters of jollity and madcap joking, the spirit of Ruphus reincarnates, asks questions and then argues that the question was answered wrongly and with malice.
lol 😂 thus the cycle of attachment and suffering continues without cessation.
