RIP Astrud Gilberto

Astrud Gilberto passed away at the age of 83. In my opinion, Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto's rendition of "The Girl From Ipanema" is almost the perfect piece. The composition by Antonio Carlos Jobim and the Portuguese lyrics by Vinicius de Moraes fit perfectly. the year 2012 marked the 50th anniversary of "The Girl From Ipanema," and someone actually located the woman who (then as a young girl) used to walk in front of the beach-front bar in Rio de Janeiro every day, inspiring Jobim and de Moraes to create the song. RIP.

I saw Stan Getz in Santa Cruz California, he even riffed on GFI

Astrud was a treasure, I played that record so many times.

I once saw Stan Getz and Astrud with Ray Brown on bass and a great drummer whose name I have forgotten. A really memorable night.

Wow! Thanks for posting, Konstantin. Looking at Helo Pinheiro's photo in The Guardian interview, one can easily imagine what she must have looked like at the age of 17 walking in front of the Veloso Bar in Rio every day. If I had been with those guys in the bar, I would have fallen in love with her every day, too. What a great song it is. And what a beautiful muse and inspiration she must have been.

I know of only two international airports named for musicians. One is Tom Jobim Airport at Rio de Janeiro. The other is Louis Armstrong Airport at New Orleans.

Astrud Gilberto’s voice has personified the Garota de Ipanema for me ever since 1965.

I saw great performances by Stan Getz, including one in Austin in the ‘60s with Gary Burton, Steve Swallow and Roy Haynes, plus a few that were dreadful, including one in Washington DC in the ‘50s with Bob Brookmeyer and Chet Baker.

On Getz/Gilberto he was magnificent.
