Make a Cajon???

I have a friend who is a very good wood worker (has all the equipment as well) he also has a passing interest in flamenco and played drums years ago.

We were talking about flamenco last night and I mentioned cajones to him and we looked at a few on the web. This sort of piqued his interest in building one. Rather or not he will play it much is another matter.

I would appreciate it if anyone can point me to a site that gives some instructions on building one. I assume that the type and thickness of the woods would be rather critical as would the dimensions, type of fasteners and glues used, as well as size dimensions and placement of any sound holes.

Thanks

I recently made some cajones
It was fun
I experimented with size
Bigger is deeper sounding...simple
The height makes a difference because of the length of your legs
Used birch aircraft plywood. Just glued em together and small screws for the front
I used half inch for the sides top, and bottom and 1/8 for the front .. put a hole in the back
Sand em and varnish.... great hobby project they all sound great
I also experimented with using snares on the inside front

That part is still in the experimental stage

I bought several different sizes of actual snares
not overly expensive 5-10 bucks at the drum shop
So far I have only used the Red Green method...duct tape
The exta large snare was too much
I did try stretching the snares using a guitar string..
but attatching was a challange and If its too loose the sound is tinny
when ya figure that part out please let me know
You will need to use 4 small rubber feet on the bottom in the corners

building cajones was only on a whim for me.......fun though

Another member here has e-mailed me a set of building instructions for a cajon. In it they use steel guitar strings A & D's. If you want the .pdf then PM me with your regular e-mail address and I will send it to you. I'm sure he won't mind me passing it along. It looks like it's been translated from German.
