update of my concert

hey guys,

Just wanted to say that my concert for the NY guitar flamenco festival went very well on Sunday. The place was standing room only. However, no matter how many years you have been doing this, you always learn something or miss something that you should not have. I have should have spent more time on the sound check instead of relying on the sound guy to take care of it. Also,I did not realize how much my nails were worn out after rehearsals w/ the dancers. So when it came to the solos, my nails were not optimal and in my opinion, it affected my arpegios and picado. But what can you..it could of been worse. it is amazing to me how much you still learn when you think you have all the bases covered. Nos vemos,

Ivan Gomez

Ivan,
cool stuff. Too bad the nails didn't go that well. I guess you don't use any kind of protection?

Anyway, wish I could have been there.

Thanks miguel. I usually use crazy glue on the tips when working w/ dancers. I just wasn't thinking this time. (:

Hi Ivan.

Yes i have the same problem is like i feel bad keeping the sound man there, is like i dont wanna inconvinience him, but that is the most important time of the day, getting good sound, i know now that i will keep the sound guy there for 2 hours if i have to this days, otherwise it can really kill your confidence to have bad sound.

Our problem is that we have 2 guitars, cello, cojon, cante, dancers get miked up too so u get like 3 or 4 minutes per average to listen to yourself and do your sound before he moves down to the next instrument.

My biggest concern is that the other guitar is the same volume because it sounds really bad for 1 guitar to do a falseta and the other one with low volume does one and because its lower volume is not keeping the feel.

youd be amazed how many times thats happened and you look at the soundguy thinking in your head ( do something ) but hes not moving :-) sounds fine to him

I am in Australia

yeah we use alot of instruments depending what the gig is, we use viola, cello, flute, clarinet, sax.

we only ever use 1 other instrument at 1 time because they can be very sound dominating and we try to not overuse it in a gig cause of the same reason.

Its great fun sometimes it gives it different spin, like this we did a sevillana with a clarinet, in some gig, heres a litlle soundfile from it.

Florian, Mark

That was great!! I really enjoyed it. Nice toque. Love the wind combination. Thanks for sharing. I travel a lot so if I am in Australia I will look for your shows! Mark, thanks. It was a great show. there is nothing like an energetic flamenco crowd. I played w/ my brother (Juan Gomez) also and some dancers. My brother started the show w/ a couple of solos. a mix of tio sabas (paco tarantas) w/ his own and a solea. I come in, and start w/ cueva del gato then improvise on it a bit w/ my brother. We then start the show w/ our own farruca w/ a dancer and continue various numbers. you guys know, there is nothing close to flamenco energy. Amigos, seguimos hablando,

Ivan,

Great thing to do, getting up there in front of folk, congrat's.
Thing is, under pressure or feeling a wee bit nervous and the fingers swell up ever so slightly making the nails feel shorter on stage than you expected. If I play on stage I make sure and time things so my nails feel a bit too long at home before I head off. Last file, two days before.

Jim.
