Exactly. It is the studio mix, not the guitar.

That is true when measuring fidelity, not really when considering mixes... not at all.

Have to respectfully disagree - both guitar and recording equipment matter. Or even more precisely - it's the weakest spot in the chain, including the sound source (guitar).

I have considerable experience recording flamenco guitars in good studios and the guitar which sounds best acoutically is not always the guitar which records best.

Apologies if this has come up before but I could not find a previous thread about this.

Does anyone here know what Conde model Viejin plays on his "Algo Que Decir" CD?
It does sound very Conde-esque but I couldn't find out if it is one of their publicly offered models or something they made custom just for him.

Either way, the sound is amazing. Tight, yet powerful bass with lots of flamenco rasp and growl, and silky, brilliant, loud trebles. Another hit recording made by Jose Luis Garrido and his assistant Freddy at Musitron - going all the way back to Rosas del Amor by Tomatito, this studio crew every time delivers without fail!

Pretty sure it is a Gravina 7 late 80's/early 90's peghead blanca. in videos it's Red finished, I would say it's a Ricardo Sanchis build by the tone, but who is to say for sure?

About recording...I used to think the guitar mattered so much as well. I did a blind test on myself in ToddK studio....low and behold I could not hardly tell one of my own guitars from another that I MYSELF HAD JUST PLAYED only minutes before!!! I used 4 or 5 examples and could only guess one exactly right, it was an eye opener.

I think the peg head in the video is a different Conde. He sold the guitar he used on 'Algo Que Decir' via mundo-flamenco.com a few years ago. If I remember right it was a machine head. Here's the label.

that is, if your instrument is "harmonically poor"

More harmonics doesn't equal a better sound. Most of the times it's the other way around since it's a MIX to be translated on audio systems, not a SOLO piece in a pantheon.

there's nothing you can do to add it unless you use harmonizers and the like

What? Harmonizers to add harmonics? I thought they were used to add harmonies... not harmonics. Enhancing harmonics is for exciters and stuff like that.

does anyone remember that Conde that was for sale here some years back, that if memory serves right had a history with Viejin. I think the story was that he asked to borrow one from Paco for a recording and Paco lent him one. Maybe this was the one that ended up in Ramon's hands that was eventually for sale?..
I'm probably remembering this wrong..

Doubt it's the guitar in question, but I don't know if the recording Viejin made was identified in this story..

didn't Pimientito buy an Atocha Conde that had belonged to Viejín?

Pimientito had my old conde that was hand picked by Ramon...and he ALSO has or had an Atocha Conde previous owned by Viejin. Neither has to do with THIS topic....I am surprised the guitar in the video is NOT the one he recorded most of the album with as it both sounds the same, was from the same time period, and even pictured in the album sleeve. (At least the peg head was pictured)...but of course we know these flamingos and their Conde fever....ding aling dong!!!
