Greetings from Panama

Colleagues,

I live in the Panamanian Highlands close to the Costa Rican border. My days are dedicated to studying music. My interests and background in music are fundamentally world music, jazz, and classical music. I have been working to master the flamenco right hand techniques with good success. My main interest is in composition and I am fully competent in using Finale program. I love this paradise where I live but I am isolated musically (something most flamenco lovers can appreciate unless you happen to live in Barcelona or such). I hope to gain knowledge and garner helpful information from this forum.

Thank you very much for your kind welcome, Miguel. I hope you enjoyed your time in the Zone. It is much different where I live regarding climate and, of course, the smallness of our community. I feel certain I will find much benefit from this forum.

As a teenager I almost ended up in Panama when my mother thought of sending me there for education.

BTW; one question:
Over 20 years ago there was a newspaper article about an island before Panama ( I think) that a rich guy had originally purchased to build a zoo on it, which in the end however was bought by a British couple who planned to make a refuge project for people of.

International folks with suiting philosophy and enough budget were invited to become citizens of a new little state. They were also required to be of any corresponding profession needed in order to keep the island running.

One would chose a lot and from a line of prefab houses and settle down for a life aimed in peace in good neighbourship.

Unfortunately, the couple never replied to my inquiry.
And years ago when I asked around on the foro for possible best spots on earth I also tried to find back and out about that island, vainly however.

Have you by chance heard of this project?

Dear colleague, thank you very much for the welcome. Finale is simply an outstanding and amazing program for writing and playing back music (and every other aspect within musical possibilities). It can instantly transpose, explode written music into parts (and implode parts into a single staff), import MIDI files to produce written music, write for any instruments, Tablature (with any tuning), and it can play back using Garritin recorded sounds. So, if you have a violin part for which you wish to be played by a Stradivarius, you simply select that instrument. It is a wonderful tool and I hope you will give it a try (it is free for a month). For writing TAB, you can simply drag the written notes to the TAB and it is done and, of course, you can do the reverse. It is hugely powerful program and thus requires much effort to master but it is a must for composition. I downloaded a MIDI of Bill Evens playing solo Blue in Green and then put it into Finale. The result is the equivalent of sitting next to Bill at the piano and watching his hands playing each note of that fantastic composition. Then, I instantly transposed the sheet to a suitable key for solo guitar. Saludos de Panama

Dear Ruphus, thank you very kindly for the warm welcome. I have not heard of a Panamanian island matching your description, however, I can easily search for info and, in the event I find something, send it to you. I can tell you that where I live is close to paradise, perpetual springtime, excellent foods, outstanding nature, and nice people. I do not have, or need, heating, A/C, or a car. I have unlimited time to devote to music (except for the limitations of my age). Nirvana….

Thanks Robug,

I would really appreciate to hear of that island project. ( Who knows, could still be worth as target. Even though they ought to have a waiting list till doomsday.)
And how I envy your situation there!
I am experiencing the diametral opposite in a run down country and culture.

Anyway, reading your discription in that composition app, reminds me of a little story with another programm. I think it was Band In A Box or such.

I was rather engaged with serious stuff of a studio rig when I was given that programm. At first if felt below me to use any other computer software than a sampler or synthesizer for generating music, but in a lazy hour I became curious enough to install and launch that thing.

After a very quick overview me tried spontaneously putting parts together for a piece of rock.
And after the tracks were roughly settled, while tweaking on the arrangement I came over options in a menue that listed genres.
It looked as if you could morph your material into different styles by the push of a button.
I did expect some useless outcome when I hit the "Jazz" button and let it play.

Out came an incredible piece of music, however, so refined and beautiful that I clicked on the 2track option to only store it away before it could disappear again.

I was so amazed by it that I didn´t even try any other genre option, and actually never used the program again ( too busy then, and too anxcious with leaving anything superfluous on the DAWs operating partition).

I still have that incredible Jazz piece, which could actually compete with some stuff from the genres historical cracks, however don´t even dare to think that it was mine.
Actually, seeing its perfection I suspect a computer lapsus to have happened and it to be a demo or template or something.

Sometimes I let it play in the living room, fascinated and still bewildered.
