I heard him live last week during the cultural week of the Peña de Juan Villar. He is young, but copying the style of José Mercé and something of a gritón with a lot to learn about cante and how to phrase it.

There are lots of better young cantaores.

Samuel El Gritón ?

I enjoyed listening to the clips at the above site, but I'm no expert. I would like to learn more about what makes a "good" cantaor. Morante, can you post a link to one of those better cantaores you know of, then use these examples to explain why one is better than the other?

Antonio sings in tune. when he has to sing high or loud, he never shouts, nor is he ever histrionic. Although he mixes a number of styles, he sings them all well because he has studied cante: in the soleá de Frijones you can see the influence of the great Tomás Pavón.

This is a masterclass: Samuel should study it and try to control himself.

Alonsito Nuñez, Rancapino Hijo shows a lot of promise: under the guidance of his famous father he has a cante muy templado and is a student of the cante of the greats, such as Caracol, Mairena, Pavón, Chaqueta, La Perla....

Hi Timoteo,

if you enjoyed listening, then it is fine for you.
A voice that I like personally for its timbre "voilé" is the young Mijitas.
As you can hear in the following example, he also has some vocal deficiencies.

Someone who likes a more artistical style will most probably not appreciate. Just a difference between the original "grito" and "el arte". Like to compare Manuel Agujetas and Enrique Morente.

If I was able to understand the letra immediately, I think I could also apreciate the cante from a singer with a bad intonation and a non-appealing voice (which - for me - would be the case of Agujetas BTW)

Greetings

a correction: the intonation of Agujetas should be fine.
Just find his voice a bit scratchy.

It indeed is rare to find a flawless flamenco cantaor, I'd say we should enjoy what we got instead of finding imperfections, if it's enjoyable

Thank you for the posts and the education.

My aficion is fairly ignorant, primarily based on what moves me. These are not completely new singers but I hope current enough to post on this thread.

In flamenco not all is perfection and control, we must also be able to assess the feeling and passion.

Samuel is only 18 years old and has two teachers behind him, as Paco Cepero and Jose de la Tomasa, flamenco figures recognized solvency.

They have recognized the potential of Samuel. And I personally do not think I have more knowledges, maybe Morante have more...
