Cante guitar Question: Habichuela &q... 
Hey guys - I was taking a lesson the other day and the teacher suggested that I can rely on Pepe Habichuela's recordings accompanying singers as generally being recorded "live", without a lot of preparation (none at all?) - even in studio.

Meaning, he doesn't work out everything in advance, and in pursuit of learning tricks-of-the-trade for accompanying, he's a good resource.

Anyone else heard this or care to comment?

Saw him live and he was performing with many singers. In general I think flamenco guitarist should be able to accompany "spontaneously"

I just meant to say that on recordings, you don't know how spontaneous it is. On many modern recordings (Cigala, etc), it seems unlikely to me that it's all spontaneous. It seems rather rehearsed in many cases. I'm sure every case, every record is different.

But the claim made was that Habichuela prefers to record in the spontaneous setting, like you would in an informal setting.

That's my question: is there a word on the street that Pepe's MO is to document flamenco in its natural state (?)

i don't think they record spontaneously, especially not if it's modern stuff...but of course if the singer is not doing things too unorthodox, any player can accompany on the spot or minimum rehearsing...this the aspect of flamenco i love the most...

Well, it's funny to point out only him. THe same can be said for all cante albums IMO. Perhaps they use the best take if there are multiple takes. But it is not like all prearranged guitar parts as though it could be recorded separate from the cante. EXCEPT of course in some special cases where you have composed letras and such (duquende samaruco, Jose Merce and Amigo, Cigala etc). But I am speaking of trad style letras. YOu can pick any old cante record to hear spontinaity. If you are after camaron, go for his album "Nuestro" with tomatito several live performances. It becomes quite obivous what and how much improvisation is done and you can identify specific letras and how some are treated on one night the same as always, or differently. As far as pepe goes he is a GREAT player, but I honestly prefer his brother Juan for cante.
