RE: Hello and 'help' from North Wales! (in reply to Jane

Hello - Perhaps I should do more of a little introduction - my name is Jane - I organise the North Wales Guitar Circle/ Cylch Gitar Gogledd Cymru (www.northwalesguitarcircle.co.uk) where we promote all types of guitar playing. We had our first Flamenco Workshop last week end (02/12/12) which I had organised with a guitarist from Andalucia - he is over in the UK for a week. We touched a little on Palmas - and I thought it would be a good idea to purchase a DVD on this for our NWGC library to help grasp some rhythms. I have only come across one! At the moment, many of us use Juan Martin books/dvd's which have been extremely useful - but any advice anyone can give on what else would be a good purchase for our library, to help encourage our Flamenco members (including myself) would be welcomed. With thanks - Jane

Hello Argaith - Many thanks. I searcHed on Amazon and came across Jeronimo Utrilla - Learn and Practice Palmas - but this was unavailable. I have since found it available through this forum and on the above website you posted for me . . . this seems to be the one to go for I think? I was wondering if anyone could actually recommend one? I will give the details to our members for them to decide - I will also see if they are interested in joining this forum - I think it could be very useful for all of us. Once again - and thank you for your time. J

i have seen that dvd

these are my totally subjective opinions of it

the navigation is a nightmare

the examples are only given through once, so you can't actually practise along with it very easily

there are almost too many examples of each palo, and too much over-analytical mathematical explanations. i just want to hear what each on sounds like, and repeat it over along with it. if necessary i can count it and/or analyse it myself. IMO analysis and explanation should not be INSTEAD of just hearing and listening!

probably much better to listen to cd's, watch performance dvd's, watch live performances, watch youtube vids. watch, listen, copy.

but having said all that, maybe highly cerebral musicians from other musical backgrounds who are total beginners at flamenco could find it useful?

Helo, a chroeso:

I've forgotten most of the Welsh words I knew when I was a teenager, scrambling around in Snowdonia, Ogwen Valley, Nant Francon, Beddgelert, etc. (1950's).

But its nice to see people still preserving the oldest living language in Europe.

Welcome to the Foro. You will find some very knowledgeable and helpfull people in here. Don't be afraid to post.

sorry if my above post seems a bit negative.... it is negative, but that's my honest opinion on the DVD.

what might be a better idea than buying that DVD is to get some of the solo compas discs, there is a "Todos los Compases" double disc with most palos on it, which would probably be more useful (and you can use them to practise guitar to!

also there is a double disc of "Contratiempos" if you want to learn/practise that.

Hi Jane,

Welcome !

I have the Jeronimo Utrilla DVD and like Mark says the navigation is terrible.
Layers of options and then there is a pause after each loop so you can't practice, I even tried to rip it to try to make some sensible loops but its structured so weirdly you can't do that.

Its a shame because I think the contents is good.

Sorry to also hijack the thread but North Wales is not far from Manchester and we have a lot of activity here this weekend. It would be great to connect sometime, I can just lend you the DVD.

Cheers

Hello Mark - I didn't think your comments negative at all - they were honest - which is what I am looking for! I will look into the others you have mentioned - I always think word of mouth is the best advertising! We had our meeting last night and I have asked others to look into what they would like to purchase for our Guitar Circle - I have also recommended they join this forum!
Thank you so much for advice - Happy Christmas/ Nadolig Llawen Jane

Hello 'Britguy' - thank you for posting a message in response to my introduction. Cymraeg is an old language - it is spoken by 48% of people here on Anglesey (according to the results of the latest census) - unfortunately, I 'dim siarad cymraeg' - I understand but cannot converse! I have had more success in learning Spanish! Thank you for your welcome to the forum - I am sure myself and other members will enjoy visiting this site - I am due to update our website - so this forum will be getting a mention! Best wishes - and 'Nadolig Llawen' Feliz Navidad to you - Jane

Hi johnnefastis - I am glad you have 'hijacked' this thread! Not only with some more information on the DVD I almost purhased - but also with some info on the Flamenco scene in Manchester! I would like to add the website you have given on to our website if that is ok? As you say - Manchester isn't that too far away.
Before I started the NWGC/CGGC I used to go to the Manchester Guitar Circle AND Chester Guitar Circle - but it was a long drive straight after work - hence the reason I started one in North Wales. Mark Shurey (Pimientito) who gave our Flamenco workshop recently told me there is a Flamenco following in Lampeter . . I am going to look in to this - when I have the time! It is so good to find Flamenco is alive over here. Thank you for posting a reply - I am so glad I found this forum! keep in touch Jane
