Arrange for a visit to the Alhambra in Granada - you can buy a ticket that includes bus and entry fee.

Climb up to the citadel (or whatever they call it).

Go to Larios and just walk around.

And yes, bring an umbrella and your coat.

I was in Malaga a few weeks back, during the feria. You can't really hear the verdiales on the clip but there's some enthusiastic Sevillanas Rocieras a bit later if you persevere!

I stayed at the Zenit. It's a ten-minute walk from the town centre but great value. You can definitely find penas via google - as someone has already pointed out. The castle is worth the walk uphill to get to it.

Malaga is well worth a visit. I hope you enjoy your trip.

Yeah, but it'll be warmer than here (I hope).

I won't be leaving Malaga during my stay, and besides I've been to Granada before (with the same friends I'll be travelling with now)...

I had hoped for some real "insider" tips

Weather forecast not good enough for you? Val is out there now and might be able to help, when she gets online. Stephen Hill is nearby as is Pimientito, send them a PM.

There is a bar in a little callejón to the left just before the entrance to Calle Larios from the Gran Vía. They have great gambas a la plancha, cheap.

You should also look for Calle Andalucía: go to the top of larios and bear right. Bodega Pimpi is a must, but the bar on the previous corner is good too.

In the morning anything in front of the Mercado is good. Avoid this area at night.

I might be in Malaga too in about 2 weeks for a few days. I've been once before but if there are insider tips then I'd like to hear them. Especially about where an english only speaking person might run into other english only speaking people.

Visit this site: www.flamenka.com. In the agenda you can find all the events in november. You really should do "La Ruta Flamenca de Málaga" wich is a walk through the old centre of Málaga with Paco Roji. He´ll show you all the emblematic places of the city and tell you everything about the history of flamenco in the city. You can get in touch with Paco through the flamenka site. If you need any help with this I can give him a call, I don´t know if he speaks English.

Must do´s are: La peña Juan Breva, El Liceo Flamenco, El pimpi(bit more touristic). I´m pretty sure that Virginia Gamez & Curro de Maria are doing a gig the 26th of november.

o.k. guys, now you're talking !
Unfortunately, neither my wife nor the befriended couple we'll be travelling with are into flamenco... I guess I'll have to "do my own thing" on some of the days

Haha! That could be my 8 year old son! The 4 year old one loves it I´m not sure if he really likes it, or he just wants to piss off his big brother.

Hi tele,

The peña Juan Breva is in the town center near of calle Granada at the end of callejón. That´s a very short street just between 2 house walls. They have a small nice museum there that is not open for tourists. They have also archived the whole histrory of flamenco. Some well known guitarists there are Gabriél Cabrera (my teacher in the 90th) and José Juan Pantoja. He teaches at the peña. In the cellar is the meeting room for the members. Gabriél had teached at the peña Fosforito and at home. I don´t know if he still teaches at the peña.

The peña El Piyayo is in Rincón de la Victoria. You can take lessons with José Antonio "El Chaparro de Málaga" who is a great guiatrist. In the 1990th years he performed as "Niño Chaparro"- He creates new falsetas while he is playing.

Another 'must see' the pub Onda Pasadena. Almost every night cante flamenco live (singer + guitarist) is performed there. Very often you meet Gabriél Cabrera playing at the pub. The pub is in the center at one sides of Plaza de Merced (if I remember correctly).

In the town center near the harbor in a small avenue you´ll find the tablao "Rincón de la Gloria". While I was there the hole night with my teacher, he parked his car there. Some ... smashed the side window took the radio and CDs and my EC map. The reason was that his license number was from Cádiz and not Málaga. So this could be an important info.
There´s another tablao outside of the town center, but I can´t remember neither its name nor the adress. All I remember is, the adress marked with "s/n" which means without number. The people at the peñas will surely know the correct adress.

If you meet Gabriél, please tell him a saludo from "Bernardo de Fulda".

Have a great time there

Salu2
Bernd

There's a new club on the waterfront called Flamenco Epoca - every Sunday. I've never been but it looks fun. Search Youtube for videos.

Review here with links to their Facebook and Twitter pages.

If you get the chance to see La Lupi and / or Curro de Maria , pull out all the stops and don't miss it. The twin jewels in Malaga's crown. And if Virginia Gamez happens to be singing with them - well - what more is there to say?

Just checked

GO GO GO

Also
Bernd mentions Gabriél Cabrera. He's a FANTASTIC player, both solo and for singers
Gabriel Cabrera. He's very friendly and helpful. Why not give him a call and find out where he's playing (but doesn't have much English)

That's correct. It starts at 19:30, and entrance is free

I'll most likely be there

Gabriél´s English language skills range from Yes to No, but his wife Mari Carmen speaks a bit French ;-)

RE: Malaga end of November (in reply to edguerin

I just got back from Málaga yesterday, where I spent four fantastic days.
The old center has been lovingly restored, the modern architecture of the yacht club area "Muelle Uno" is an impressive counterpoint and there're plenty of great museums. The weather was great and this time of year very few (other) tourists bothered us.

The venue with Virginia Gámez and Curro de Maria was scheduled for 19:30 on Monday, and according to a web-site I'd found, free and "open to all".
However when we arrived it turned out to be a special event for invited guests only, sponsored by the Cajamar banc.
The somewhat unfriendly manager made quite clear that we had no chance to get in without an invitation. The senior manager happened to notice my disappointment though, and said he'd wave us in, if not all places were occupied by the time the venue started.
And we had luck!!!

Virginia started with a Granaína tdf that had the shivers running down my spine.
The tientos were just as outstanding as the peteneras. They finished with a fabulous old style bulerias à la Bernarda de Utrera/Paco de Gastor and a series of fandangos libres as an encore.
Curro is fantastic! He manages to surprise you with unexpected chord combinations and runs that display his virtuosity without giving up the traditional flamenco roots and sound. A true master !

After the concert was over the senior manager asked me wether I had liked it, and I told him I was thrilled, and - it being the eve of my 60th birthday - couldn't of asked for a better present.

"Y tan barato" was his answer, before adding "¡Felicidades!"

I know exactly where that picture was taken. I was there about 5 weeks ago and the weather then was still warm enough for sunbathers to be out on the beach.

Glad to hear you had a nice trip.

I'm so delighted that you managed to get into the show. Curro, Virginia (and la Lupi) are amazing and it would have been too awful if you'd missed them. I do believe that they're the driving force behind all the young flamenco talent coming out of Malaga. They display such joy in what they do. And isn't Malaga a wonderful place to visit?
Here's a little video for you - it even has some flamenco in it.

Twenty years or so ago, Malaga was a place you landed in and got out of as fast as possible.
I'd never spent more than a couple of hours there, till now.
