What would you do? 
I have up to $5,000 to buy a flamenco guitar. If this was your first and only flamenco you could buy - what would you buy (and why would you buy it) if you could spend my money? Would you buy new or used? Which make, year and model? What would your thought process be in making a good decision?

GailP, that is very subjective, but if youre asking for that: Vicente Carillo.
Why?
Have you ever heard a Vicente Carillo ?

Others pay attention to the design or look of a guitar; i try to completely concentrate on the sound.

Like Todd said. An Aaron Green for five grand and about a year to get it, or add about 800 more and three years for a Lester DeVoe.

When you get into that price range, don't think in terms of "make, year, and model". Think in terms of hand made to your specifications.

If you are in the US, think US due to the dollar getting hammered. Spanish built guitars will be 20 to 30 percent more, just because of the exchange rate.

A used conde hermanos blanca A26 from the 90's, previously owned and used by a professional. Not easy to find but that is what I would do with my only shot.

Sorry, I don't recommend a Vicente Carillo for that price range. I had a blanca and it was a good deal for $2000 but not $5000 imo.

If you are in USA, order a DeVoe. In Europe order a Jose Romero.

how about a Shelton-Faretta? I have one, and it still smells great, like a trampoline. Anyone else play one or have an opinion? portland, oregon.

INDEED, WHAT DOES A TRAMPOLINE SMELL LIKE? I COULD SAY IT DEPENDS ON WHOSE KNEES HAVE BEEN BOUNCING ON IT BUT, WHAT I MEANT WAS THAT AFTER A YEAR, WHICH I REALIZE IS A VERY SHORT TIME, IT RETAINS THE CHARACTER THAT ORIGINALLY ATTRACTED ME TO IT, AND ALSO, ONE'S GOLPES' HAVE AN ADDED RESONANCE LIKE A NYMPH DIVING INTO A FROG POOL.

I'd buy an Anders Elliason blanca made exactly to my specs, then use the leftover cash to fly over to spain to pick it up, and maybe stay a little while.

Samwise. I think i would follow your idea.
5000$ is about 50.000 swe KR a flamenco guitar would give me about 20-30 thousand left after the buy. And for that i could stay in spain for 6 month.
