New Member: Rasgueado Advice

Hello,

I'm a new member and new to flamenco (but not to guitar, mostly flatpicked). I would like some advice on developing good clean rasgueado technique. In particular I don't have much finger independence, particularly between the ring and small fingers. I'd really appreciate any suggestions you could give for specific exercises and routines.

Thanks!

I should clarify: I'm looking for advice on exercises aside from regular guitar practice. I'm interested in any strengthening exercises, or physical therapy exercises that promote finger strength and finger independence.

There's plenty of 'finger independence' exercises on youtube. Many for piano players that are good.
( Here's a good one that I often practiced

)

Just keep at it. Some Flamencos like to practice on tables. When I first started learning Flamenco, I'd often practice on my hip...just cause that's where my hand was when I often walked to class.

I practice slowly and purposefully. I also practice different patterns of rasgueado.

pami
ami
mi
ipami

I first learned from Juan Serrano who does ipami. I think this pattern helped my finger independence as getting it to "roll" continuously and evenly was especially difficult.

David Maldonado also once told me to make sure your fingers go straight out and close together (as opposed to 'fanning' out), this is one of those long-term wrist health things though. But I think it also applies to finger independence as it does require a little bit more control.

The best exercise is, do the technique you want to learn a lot. over and over and over and over... and slowly.

I never did such exercises..I believe they only slow one down. Too much thinking is not good. It can also cause problems if you overdo something theoretically. Guitar playing is also a mental thing for a big part. If you **** that up with too much theoretical ****.. you get problems at some point.

Well,..but everyone is different. Try it. Maybe for u it works.
