narex chisels

I'm a sucker for chisels and planes so when I saw this special on Narex chisels from Lee Valley for about $10 each plus shipping I bought a set of four. This was a couple of months ago and I finally took some time away from my garden duties to try them out today.

They are really nice looking with comfortable handles. The flat sides of the chisels varied from convex to concave so I had to use the coarse diamond stone to flatten them before I could begin shapening. I put a slightly flatter bevel on them with the band sander and began the real sharpening starting with medium water stone and working down to 2000 grit. I'm not a fanatic about sharpening but I like my chisels to be sharp enough to easily shave the hair off my arm. After about 1.5 hours I surrendered. These chisels are not even in the same class as a basic blue handled Marples or yellow handled Stanley. If you're looking for carving chisels don't waste your money on Narex like I did.
