I'm not sure about other makers, but my Romanillos is #407. Julian Bream's famous Romanillos, made soon after, perhaps the very next one, ended up being #501. The explanation is that mine is the 7th of the 4th series, modeled to some extent on a 1950 Hauser, while Bream's was built as a trial run for a commissioned copy of a 1933 Hauser that belonged to Sergio Abreu. Due to the success of Bream's guitar, the 5 series continued for some time. On the other hand, in the 1960s and 1970s, the Ramirez 1a's and 2a's seemed to belong to the same sequence, whether they were classical or flamenco. My 1982 Arcangel Fernandez blanca has no serial number, though the label is signed and the underside of the soundboard is signed and dated. When Richard Brune appraised it, he explained that at the time, all of Arcangel's instruments were contracted to a Japanese dealer. Those guitars were delivered with serial numbers. Occasionally Arcangel would make an instrument for a favored player or collector, but these would have no serial number. According to the English luthier Brian Cohen, through whom I obtained the Arcangel in 2000, it had belonged to a collector. Brune said, after going over it with a magnifying glass, there was no sign it had ever been touched, much less played. I bought it to play, but it's been well taken care of. RNJ
