Best Cante Anthology

Can anyone advise me on the best cante anthology?
I know of the 'Rito y Geografía del Cante' which is out of print I think and thee is also 'Magna antología del cante flamenco'.

I'm sure there are others but, as they are all expensive, I'd appreciate some help in choosing.

Aplologies if this has been covered in another thread

RE: Best Cante Anthology (in reply to krichards

Among classic audio anthologies, "Medio Siglo" is the best in my opinion because most of it is nice just for listening.

There are a few artists' albums, often just a single disk, that constitute good anthologies, like "Besana" by Eduardo Garrocho for fandangos de Huelva (although I don't know what aficionados in Huelva have to say about it), "Canta Jerez" for Jerez styles obviously, Antonio Mairena and Agujetas recorded similar albums of just soleás and siguiriyas, there's a very good anthology of cantes de Cádiz with Aurelio, La Perla, Chano and others...

For bigger anthologies, the Hispavox anthology is a classic, although it's a bit tame and dated for my taste, and the Magna anthology is huge but isn't as good artistically, IMO.

If you want video, you can't go wrong with Rito y Geografía de... and Puro y Jondo.

I´ve got "medio siglo" and I´ve listened to it a lot. I like that its not the same singer all the time. But its a very traditional collection.

Medio Siglo is excellent, but for coverage it's hard to beat the Chant du Monde series in 20 volumes, and not one rubbish CD in the lot.

thats true. And relatively cheap and with a lot of songs on each one.

I make my own anthologys, putting some 5 - 6 cd´s that i want to hear in my Mp3 and listen to them in random mode.

Agreed, but not an anthology. There are other important album series, but that one is pretty good.

Another anthology was Hispavox's old "Por..." series. Camarón's material was dissected like that, too.

RE: Best Cante Anthology (in reply to Anders Eliasson

I've got loads of stuff on my Ipod, traditional and modern.
But what i really want is a classic reference anthology.
Last week I was I was in Nerja and spent some time with Jingle. One evening he had a singer (Angel from Sevilla) and I had my first attempt at accompaniment : very very difficult for me.
I don't get opportunities for cante accompiniment here in England and , as I discovered, its not the same as dance accompaniment.

Part of the problem is I'm just not familiar enough with the tradional songs from each palo so I'm looking for an anthology to help

You are on your way into to darkness. The tunnel is very long. Be prepared to struggle and suffer during a decade or two.

Cante is troublesome.
With respect of listening, just listen to all you can get your hands on. No anthology will help you more than a few steps. Singers are very independant people (very andalucian) and they jump around in styles and periods. The most difficult palos are often the ones we consider to be the easyest. I consider Tientos and especially Tangos to be the most difficult palos. The compás is easy but they jump in and out and mix very different local styles.

Thats exactly what I found with Angel. I was hoping it was just him!

RE: Best Cante Anthology (in reply to krichards

Do you mean current singers, or do you want to hear some great singing by some of the superb cantaors of the past? If the latter, there is the famous three record Hispavox anthology organized by Perico del Lunar. I have all or most of it on a five record set – "Antologia del Cante Flamenco" - Orfeon. The entire anthology is accompanied only by Perico del Lunar – the greatest flamenco guitarist I have ever heard - and Nino Ricardo.

This anthology covers a wide spectrum of cante, and really shows what cante is all about, as well as what flamenco guitar is all about. It's one of my prized possessions, that I have to figure out some way to get onto CDs.

I don't know if it's available anywhere, or if it has been put on CD. If it has, I would want to get it myself. I understand that Perico Hijo – a fantastic flamenco guitarist, every bit as good as his father – organized a similar anthology in 1992, and accompanied. This was also a three record set, that might or might not be on CD.

Hey!

I am looking into this one at the moment, although the one recommended by Prominent critic sounds very good too!

Oh boy! I have never heard of this one, but from the names of the singers and guitarists I can tell you to grab it quick while you can.

I just took a closer look at this. This is an unbelievable anthology, packed with legendary singers and guitarists. And ten records. I don't know what 69 Euros comes to in dollars, but whatever it is, I can tell you right now that it's worth every penny for anyone with a real interest in cante.

I have to wonder if you or anyone else are actually interested, but that's the Orfeon anthology, recorded in Mexico a few years after the original "Hispavox" anthology. So, for "great singing by some of the superb cantaors of the past" as compared to "current singers," you've actually got two different anthologies there.

Both are available on CD, or at least they have been until recently.

More like 2002.

Gosh, I wish I'd noticed that one...

I have this collection of records. It is very interesting to go through. I also have another different one that is called antologia del cante flamenco y cante gitano. It has red and a green box of records. It is also good.

Rafael Romero, Manolo Caracol, Bernardo de los Lobitos, and Pepe el Culata don't constitute "superb cantaors of the past?"

Thanks for the info about the CDs. I have never been able to find them on CD.

Yes, they were good singers, no disagreement there. There used to be a website for ordering the Orfeon anthology on CD. The Caracol-Ricardo tracks are particularly good, bulería por soleá and romera if I remember right.

EDIT: Here's the company website, there's a telephone number and an ordering process, but I don't know if they'll go anywhere.

Yes I think this is probably the one for me.

Many thanks to everyone for your suggestions.
