Cosas Malas

I was just listening to Paco's new album last night.. man, I hate that album. I am as big a fan of Paco as anyone, but after some space after the album was released, I can say for sure that I don't like it. Completely unmelodic, hard to follow, bad and annoying cante... am I the only one who feels this way? I like Paco's early work the best, his later work not as much, and this album not at all. There's not even any picado! And please someone tell me they agree that the singing on this album is bad.

Sorry Paco, I love ya man...

I wouldn´t say i hate it. I really didn´t like Zyriab. But i didn´t hate it.
When i listen to Pdls new cd. I get the feeling of "elevator music". The album finnishes before it starts and it´s hard to remember the music you just heard.
But i still like it to a 80-90%. To me it feels a lot like random pieces of music put together.
any way i still like it a lot. But to me this is almost as bad as Zyriab.

hell..now i feel bad.. Sorry paco

You mean "big bad things" instead of "little good things"? The original video sort of put me off. To be very honest here, I don't listen to PdL much nowadays - like learning to drive by watching Michael Schumacher race!

Now Now Michael,
If you remember, you are the one who gave me stick for suggesting that budgeted money would be better spent on the "Understanding Flamenco" CD with Amir Haddad?
Remember?

cheers

Sorry Miguel, but I like a lot of it. I have not heard it but once or twice, but I saw his last concert and he played a lot of that record. Every guitarist I know was there and the concensus was that Paco burned down the house. I would have to agree. A guitarist I know who is a master flamenco guitarist was simply humbled. When I pointed out to him that he could play 90% of what was played, he just shook his head. The bulerias were drawn out to eight -ten minutes and the falsetas flew out of his head like water running out of a river. The facility was unmatched. He did bring singers to the concert and I assume that they sung the choros from the record. It sounded great.

I love it. Listen to something from it maybe everyday. Love the first bulerias, he really has escaped his old rehashed rhythmic phrasing. Love the chorus "Que lo que dicen no le toca las palmas, ....toca li toca las palmas"- very intense. Camaron on CD again is great. I don't listen to every track, of course. His rumba duet is really nice, countrapuntal. Also love his abanico remates in "Volar". Very dance oriented, very different for him. Don't really care for the female vocals these days. I prefer Maria Vargas, Paquera, etc.

For me "Soniquete" and "Compadres" from Ziryab are compositional high points for Paco. Have not heard anyone out do these master pieces, including himself. And yeah, I like Fabulosa, Fantasia, Duende, Fuente, etc, and Sabicas. I love it all man.

I will spend some time trying to understand it. It's hard for me to believe that Paco could make anything that I would hate, unless it's simply because I don't get it. Although I don't think I will ever like the cante on that album.

By the way, I just heard El Pele for the first time the other day. Man that dude rocks!

I absolutely love it! When I first heard it, I didn't know what to think. The more I listen to it, the more I understand it. It is a bit more different than his other material. I remember reading an interview with him during the recording where he said that there would be little picado if any. It's cool to see a different side of Paco. He's already done everything else. Why not something different?
