I used to play tirando all the time for classical guitar and never had any problem with arps & stuff.
Then i changed the hand position for flamenco - extending the thumb a lot - and now i have problem with both tirando and apoyando. But i think it is due to lack of practice.

Solution:
There is an amazingly good - results wise - exercise by Jose Tanaka that pretty much solves the problem. Check it out!

. Στο tirando παλεύομαι.... In which of Tanaka are you referring to?

Jose has a lot of good exercises for arpeggios and thumb stuff.

for arpeggios, i use more of the side of my thumb and play from the big joint, so as not to disturb the hand positioning for the other fingers. this simple change helped me a lot.

Agree with you Leo, such small things can do alot.. The thumb gets a more smooth up and down movement instead of circling around all over the place and you always hit with a consistent surface too.
