Fashion guitar

I drove my wife down to Tucson to the annual Gem Show, where jewelers and purveyors of gems and rocks all over the world came to show their wares. It was pretty impressive, and I would have really enjoyed myself if I had a million dollars and liked precious stones (well I do like jewelry but not its components particularly). I was gratified to get several business calls... 1, a rumba guitarist wanting me to play with him on Feb. 14--besides being Valentine's Day, it's my 1st anniversary so I had to decline, 2. some organization wanting to hire me for a date in March, great, 3. an art gallery owner wanting to hire me in April, great, 4. a cryptic message from a lady from Neiman Marcus with a phone number.

Now Neiman Marcus is one of my favorite stores, a hideously expensive place for rich people to shop, and for people like me to sight see. Yes, I do have clothes from there, so I was wodnering what this was all about. I returned the call, and the lady said she was looking for a very attractive, good looking male guitar player, having gotten my name from a modeling agency.

? I asked her, I'm sorry, do you want a model or a guitar player, because I don't know any modeling agencies--I'm a musician? She said the deal was there is this Venezuelan fashion designer who is going to have a book signing, and they want a musician to play music "that tied in with her ethnic background." And apparently it was important that this musician "be very attractive."

I thought this was kind of funny, and was still a little confused. Did they want a musician, a model, or a male escort??

Apparently, yes, they wanted a musician. I still had no idea how she had gotten my name. I told her that I don't play any Venezuelan music, that my specialty was playing "elegant ambiance and background Spanish guitar music." She thought that would be perfect! So I made a date for me to drop off my Cd.

Of course I got all dressed up (as I do for all sales meetings), because I wanted to get as close as possible to the ideal of "an attractive male guitar player." I went to her desk and was surprised to see a rather young, very good-lookign woman who unfortunately didn't appear very friendly or well-disposed to me. I gave her my materials and CD, and she said thanks for stopping by. I also told her I had a gig at a resort, that she could stop by if she wanted to hear me play.

Well, for some reason I didn't really think she was going to call me back, but a few days later she did. Her attitude had changed a lot--apparently she had liked my CD! She said she was still weighing a few options, and it turns out my main competition was Miguel Rodriguez. Now some of you have heard Miguel's clips on the internet--suffice it to say that he is to me what Paco de Lucia is to Firefingers... but he is not a particularly good looking man! So all I can do is wait, and hope I get the gig!
