Flamenco in Cambridge UK?

Hey folks, this fall I'll be leaving the States and moving to olde Cambridge. Do any of the Brits here know if there's much in the way of flamenco in the area, either in shows or guitar teachers?

There's a dance class in the city and at least two guitarists that I know of. If the worst comes to the worst, you're in travelling distance of London. Try this site www.flamencoagenda.

Lol! I play for that class! (assuming you mean Mari Pia's class?)

I rate the teacher very highly. She doesn't perform currently, and I don't know of any other live flamenco in Cambridge.

Which two guitarists do you know of Donald? You in Cambridge? I live quite a way out and have to travel about a lot.

ps some information you might find is out of date, eg Felipe De Algeciras does not teach in Cambridge (and hasn't done for about a year or so).

Admit it Ramparts,

Your really just coming to get a team place in the annual Oxford/Cambridge boat race.

Now THAT is prestige!

Forget about the Math...get back to practising on that rowing machine...

cheers,

Ron

The class I was referring to was the Felipe old one, which I was assuming was still on the go. One of the guitarists I referred to was the weekly class teacher's husband, Felipe just did a monthly session or 3 weeks a month. The other guitarist is called David who might have been moved to another of his company's offices. The flamencoagenda site seems to be down, it used to be maintained on behalf of Spanish based performers for promotion purposes but had very useful information on the UK flamenco scene. Try some of the links off www.PenaLondres.

Hi, Felipe hasn't taught in Cambridge for at least a year, and stopped weekly classes there maybe a year or several before that - he was still doing periodic workshops but nothing now for at least a year.

Don't know a

weekly class teacher's husband,
- which teacher is that? and haven't met anyone called David.

Mari Pia teaches every week, i've been playing for her for over a year, with two other guitarists.

I am trying to get her to sort out her publicity and get her on the London Peña website/newsletter, and also I have told Felipe that they are still saying he's teaching in Cambridge so between us hopefully we will get them to update their info!

Mark,
There was a tall woman in Felipe's Cambridge dance class who did a bit of teaching as well. Its been a long time since I've done a workshop in Algeciras. Jenny is the only one of the Cambridge people I remember by name.

Hi Ramparts,

if you are interested in getting together with a very basic-level flamenco guitar player (me ...) during your stay in Cambridge UK, let me know.

Enjoy part iii maths - and Cambridge!

Did you say "boat", Ron?
Logical assumption perhaps, but I suspect you heard it wrong, and that after spending the summer guitaring his way around southern Spain, Adam may be interested in this rather more flamenco caper:

Could be Mari-Pia (Mari-Pia Esperanza Molina), or Annie (Anastasia Castiglioni) who (I think) teaches more Spanish Dance Society than Flamenco.

The monthly Felipe workshops/classes in Norwich aren't happening now, he's coming to Cambridge instead, details in the events section.

Will put details of Mari-Pia's class in events section too.
