How to get into sight reading?

OK,
so I have been playing from tabs for a decade or so, and think that perhaps its time I got into sight reading. Could someone please offer some advice on how to get started. Thank you

Use a classical guitar method since it is well established in teaching you reading through gradually increasing skill levels.

Here's a good one to start with (and cheap too!)

Or one that has more exercises for each step of learning:

I used this one in junior college music school.

Two more suggestions. Both are dedicated to learning sight-reading with progressive exercises.

Just to be precise, the term "sight reading" is being used here to indicate reading standard musical notation as opposed to tabs. But "sight reading" really refers to someone who already knows how to read standard musical notation, who picks up some sheet music and just plays it immediately on sight without preparation, prior study, analysis, and slow practice working through the piece. Classical guitarists, and in fact musicians of all kinds, practice sight reading as part of their daily practice routine.

As for recommendations, I second Chiste de Gales' suggestion to use classical guitar methods. An old friend of mine, the late Frederick Noad, a classical guitarist, wrote a really good book entitled, "Solo Guitar Playing," that I think would be perfect for your purposes. It's available in paperback.

just grab a carcassi book. he does all kinds of exercises and has easy etudes as well as progressively more difficult ones to get you into it.

Martin,

Get started by understanding a very simple truth:

One reads (music) as well as one writes (music).

It also enhances creativity to balance out those two activities.

Try it, you'll like it!
