Paco's new album

There was a brief story this morning in the online version of El País newspaper saying that Paco's new album will be copla. I don't know if it's just me being clumsy, but I looked for it later and couldn't find it, although I did find a post on the Paco forum with a link to the same article:

http://blogs.elpais.com/papeles-perdidos/2010/02/paco-de-luc%C3%ADa-prepara-un-disco-de-copla.html

It says that the new recording will be dedicated to copla. In case anyone doesn't know, copla is a style of singing, maybe a little like a flamenco-sounding ballad, but more like a temper tantrum after too much cheap alcohol . So they're saying that his next album will be copla, not flamenco. It looks like this might be a rumor that's been flying around for some time. Anybody know about this or have any thoughts?

Seriously doubt it. Could be just an opinion of some aficionado too. I remember reading Pohren describe Siroco and Zyrab as "pure jazz music".

Probably it was so 20 years ago but now we are so used to listening to that kind of stuff that we can't tell the difference.

I would be surprised, too. But the link I posted isn't a blog, it's a reporter's article for a newspaper, so there's supposed to be some substance to the story (not just opinion). I know what you mean about Pohren. His book on PdL was a real disappointment, especially after the earlier ones, which were not without the hardline attitude, but at least in smaller, more rational and more eloquent doses. The first time I read the PdL bio, I couldn't believe it was the same author. The first ones were very well written though, IMO.

Hard to beat Cositas. I think it will be a bit "behind" it.
That is, if its going to be a flamenco album at all...

Gosh, is that too much to ask???

Well, he can do anything he wants to and I won't pass judgement on him, but I will feel disappointed if the whole thing is him (and others) accompanying just copla.

It's in the air there these days, the cantaores doing boleros, copla...maybe he'll sing!

Great comment from a reader of that that blog:

"El mejor guitarrista del mundo junto con Ray Cuder. "

Hi Mike. Where did you get the idea that anyone was coming down hard on Paco? I even said that he can do whatever he wants to. Maybe I should have added "...and I'll still admire him."

As I'm sure you know, although lives were shorter in the past, plenty of players were hitting full stride at 62. Look at Niño Ricardo for example.

Just in case you misunderstand the above statement, I should add that it's not supposed to reflect on Paco in any way at all, but rather on your line of reasoning.

(Warning: Silly stuff starts here!)

He's that fella that went down to Venezuela, I think, to make a film with the commies. I didn't see none of them triangular banjos that the ruskies use, though.

(End of silly stuff. I wasn't implying that you would speak or think that way.)

Hopefully PdL makes me wanna buy his album...I've skipped 346 albums of him, apart of the first two or so, and some camaron stuff.

Norman,
I hope you are right, that hitting the age of 62, makes comming out the best of him again.

Edit: In my opinion ofcourse

RE: Paco's new album (in reply to kozz

Hi Kozz, yeah I read a post of yours where you said that you never used to listen to modern toque but now you're starting to like it sometimes.

If I'm not mistaken about that, please give the album "Sólo quiero caminar" a try (if you haven't already got it). I really don't like "Monasterio de Sal," but the two bulerías "La tumbona" and "Piñonate" are incredible, like he's singing with the guitar (particularly in the way that one falseta follows another).

By the way, Estevan, that wasn't intended as a snide reference to your post. In my opinion.

I don't think Paco's playing is going to improve with age. I'm not trying to say anything about his health or intentions or anything; it's just that guitarists who are playing strong into their 60s seem to play better and better right up to the end (or shortly before the end). Diego del Gastor might have been like that, too. Paco seems to be a different story because his playing has always been incredibly good. He's set the standard several times over. I've always felt sorry for him for the expectations that he's created for himself.

Hee Normam,
actually I do have the LP now. This afternoon I've went to a second hand store and bought 15 albums for 15 euros.
3 Albums from Paco, I'll hope to make good money out of those , and also from a old member from here, Philip John Lee.
The other ones I liked the covers very much....dont know what it'll be....probably very cheesy, with maybe 1 or 2 extraordinary tracks.

I am gonna put on the Paco album Norman...who knows, thanks!

Oh, Bernabé de Morón!!! Solid ricardista, like Eduardo de La Malena and Antonio Arenas, from what I've heard. What else you got there, Kozz? I can't see the rest very well in the image. Is that Philip John Lee in the middle row on the right?

I get lots of enjoyment out of following Paco's compás in those two bulerías. They're the only solo guitar tracks that give me that kind of thrill, along the lines of following Borrico, Piriñaca, Talega and others when they sing. Notice how Paco "comes back in" at different points in the compás. Sometimes it's hard to say when one ends and another begins!

Lionel, I'm glad you agree. I just wish I had used as nice a metaphor as your cake!

Norman,
I've uploaded one track from Bernabe de Moron...I always listend first to the seguiriyas....so a quick recording was made....

http://www.foroflamenco.com/tm.asp?m=129731&p=1&tmode=1&smode=1

Yes Philip John Lee is there...
Manitas de Plata
Grupo Flamenco Antonia Arenas, with a nice version of nostalgica flamenca and some other nice tracks

Pepe de Cordoba with a beautifull solea Los Ojos de mi Morena....
Guitarra: Andres Serrita and Beni del Pino

Flamenco Fass with Antonio Salazar and cante Juan de Dios and Antonio Gomez

Maria Luisa Romero...skipped through it very quickly but a lot of castagnettes

THE BEST OF SPAIN
4 discs, only one worth listening
1 Sardanas from Barcelona
2 Flamenco Guitars
3 Muerta en la arena
4 Spanish students sing

and Narciso Yepes, Carlos Paredes (portugal), and Rumbas Flamencas by Las Mejores

and three singles....those covers are just lovely

The Carlos Montoya single sounds much much better when played at 33rpm than at 45rpm....I did it by mistake and I loved it.

Sorry for the interruption, back to Paco again.

EDIT:
I've listened to both the buleriases few times now, I like them!

RE: Paco's new album (in reply to NormanKliman

This thread is getting too weird.

I had a Bernabe' de Moron album that had about five guitarists playing march like solea instrumental all at the same time. It sounded like:

chun chun chun chun .....chun chun chunc chun chun ...CHUN CHUN ......blobaloba lob blobabaloba lob.....chun CHUN.

Hilarious.

I was going to say about Pohren's writing, I think he's an awkward writer as writers go, but he was in the right place at the right time to get fantastic stories. Something about his writing annoys me, perhaps the opinions and the way he constructs sentences give the writing a slightly pretentious quality. What struck me most was the way he talked about the Moron gypsies, especially the frankness with which he talked about Fernandillo's life. It bordered on being too revealing for me. I could not decide whether that was brave writing or a mild form exploitation. I still can't.
