new article on Lester Devoe with Vicente

Him with Vicente.

It looks like Vicente has at least 3 Devoes.

Interesting that Ottmar Liebert (make sign of the cross here) also has a DeVoe cedar negra as his favorite guitar and a cypress/cedar as well. Lester is not one to wait for the world to beat a path to his door and looking through the Liebert archives of his diary I read that Ottmar relates how Lester showed up with a couple of his guitars while he was doing a sound check somewhere and he was convinced.

That was a bit of a surprise as he has a 3 year wait list and that's how long I had to wait. He's supposed to be building it now if he didn't start to work on Vicente's new negra instead.

The way Lester has worked with resellers in the past is a waiting list like everyone else, or at least that's what he told me. Dan Zeff has a standing order for I believe one a year. So Mundo may have been on his list for several years (or not). I certainly have my doubts that Vicente waits three years, but I can't blame Lester if that's the case.

Patrick, you are right. Lester makes about 4 guitars for Vicente and sends the best two for Vicente's review. From the last batch that was made for Vicente, I tried the 2 leftovers. Lester tried to incorporate Reyes characteristics into the guitars made for Vicente i.e. narrower string distances at the bridge and higher action. I told him to stick to his initial models because they were much more comfortable.

Every time I play his guitars, I always wonder why I invested in Reyes guitars. But, we have to admit that Reyes has unique sound quality that other guitars don't (my opinion of course).

Yaaa...just got an e-mail from the man himself (DeVoe) that my cedar negra is finished
but he is concerned it might freeze during delivery, and we are having the worst winter in a coon's age. FedEx and UPS aren't even delivering. Only old faithful, USPS. What to do?

hmm if Devoe himself is concerned, then i wouldn't risk anything and wait until fedex etc. deliver again.

you have waited so long, don't risk it for just a few days / weeks more.

btw, congrats !

When I see him using this model on stage ok. But like that it looks like a commercial... How much did Devoe paid him for these shots? I don´t know what to think about that. Im sceptic.

i don't think that Devoe paid him anything.

Vicente likes Devoes as well as Reyes.

and i would also publish this foto, if i were Devoe. why not?

i think the relationship of Devoe with many people is completely different and more than commercial (as you can read in the story)

not everyone is making politics like Andalusian Guitars ;-)

DeVoe didn't pay him a dime...period. DeVoe is a one-man show that works out of his garage. He makes a good living, but doesn't have deep pockets by any means. Lester is a class act. He also has had a three-year waiting list forever and doesn't need to stoop to lowbrow tactics. By the way, he had a three-year waiting list before he ever met Vicente.

I would guess Vicente records with DeVoe's because he likes the way they sound recorded. I would also assume he plays his Reyes live because he likes the way it sounds live or is just more comfortable using it live versus a DeVoe.

Yeah, Lester is pretty good at marketing and name-dropping, but wouldn’t we all do the same. If I even just met Paco or Vicente I’d probably name drop as well.

Lester has all the work he can handle. I think he is close to 60 years old and will probably cut off his waiting list in a few years. Ruck cut his off when he felt he had enough orders to last his working lifetime.

My DeVoe was the first he ever made for someone in Alaska. We made sure that I was home when the delivery was made, this stretched out the delivery time by a couple of weeks, but it was worth it. The carton was marked, "keep at room temperature!" The Calton case really helped to stabilize the temperature. I have had the guitar for two and one-half years now, and the spruce top has really opened up. I am one year away from my second, a blanca. I played my "littler Lester" in concert a couple of weeks ago, the DeVoe is excellent! Best guitar that I have ever played.

2 weeks...I should be so lucky. Lester doesn't want to have it exposed to freezing temperatures and that rules out what's left of February. I expect mid-March at the earliest. Bummer!

may I ask, how much you invested in the Reyes? . also, in which ways do you fine Devoes guitars more comfortable?.
