Solea por buleria is a style in itself! very similar to alegrias rythmically but in A, like bulerias 'por medio' although usually played a tad slower and with a different 'aire' - more dramatic. speed wise its inbetween a solea and bulerias.

You can also play solea por bulerias in other keys traditionally E 'por ariba' although A is more comon and then there are all the modern keys Eb Ab etc.

There is also a style called Bulerias por solea which is always a topic of debate but I think the difference is quite subtle (or maybe not, just covering myself incase there's any strong oppinions on the matter).

You're best bet is try to listen to any recordings or

a little search found these

Hi Fergus,
What is the base "chord shape" used when playing in A flat or E flat?
Also is it just normal EADGBE tuning?

cheers

Ron

Thanks Fergus!

It is for thursday, perhaps I can join a flamenco quatro, they are busy on a Solea por Bulerias.
I am sure they help me a little, but it is easyer for me to know what I am talking about a little.

So, to get it corect, it is more or less, a slow alegrias in A ( Por medio).
well, I will practice a little wit it.

Thanks too for the sound samples!

Peter

Peter,

To me, Solea por Buleria is more like Solea with a swing to it. The key is in the accents. The accents fall on 3, 7, 8, 10 and 12. The 7, 8 versus 6, 8 gives it that little kick or swing.

Listen to the first MP3 on the second site that Fergus listed above. The compas' is really easy to pick up if you just think of it as a Solea compas' with the 7,8 kick to resolve it. On the MP3 you hear a tap on the 6th, but it's normally left silent. Some people tap the 6th to stay on compas'.

If you can do it, I would play it in the key of E and you can toss in some Solea falsetas. This way you can wing it without having to put a bunch of work into it. Don't get into the thinking of Buleria like Fergus said. To me the only resemblance is 12 beats. Think more Solea.

Peter,

IMO best to think of it as a slow buleria with characteristic arpeggio in between beats 7 8 9 then 10 11 12 (10 11 12 ends with another arpeggio as you would do in solea).
Played in por medio and always better to emphasise the standard cycle of beats 3 6 8 10 12. If it's for dance, they'll appreciate it.
Bb on beat 3 and start each arpeggio sequence (7 8 9) stepping down the bass notes while holding Bb to get to A on beat 10.

Very simple but complex to explain in words. I hope this helps.

Jim.
