Replacing old tap plates? 
I have a Yamaha CG171SF & would like to replace the tap plate with a larger one. The stock plate does not cover the area I need. I have ordered a 3M adhesive backed plate from "Strings on Line" & wonder how best to remove the current plates. Will they peel off with care or is there a technique to coax the adhesive to release. The plates are clear BTW.

I suggest, to be a little cautious when pulling them off, cause if the addhesion is stronger, you can probably remove a part of the lacquer with it. so, I would try to pull it off very slowly and not in 90 degree angle from the surface of the soundboard, but close to 0 -5 degrees.

but that's not such a big problem. the tricky one will be when finally you will have to put the new one on again... then you have to pay a good attention not to leave any small dust particles, or air bubles underneath. do it very slow and precisely. also, peel the sticky part off the plastic cover only as far as you need and leave the rest on it until you get there. otherwise you will have a problem needing four hands instead of just two...

Wouldn't it be a good idea to use a heat gun to soften the adhesive?

Thanks all. I had posted this in another subforum & got some good links to different methods. If you're curious check in the luthiers forum. The wet technique looks like an interesting method. I am now armed with knowledge & dangerously confident!

I have replaced a smaller clear plate with a larger 3M before. I used a blow drier at pretty close range to heat up a corner until I could get a little blade under it. once I had good hold of a corner I kept heating the plate as I pulled it up slowly! I then used some alcohol free nail polish remover to clean the old adhesive before gluing the new plate.

I've always used "goo gone" to remove stubborn adhesives. Its a citrus derived
cleaner that is safe on wood, but I don't know if it's safe on french polish.
