looking for a dance class to play for

I have tried this before and remember why I stopped looking.

How does one find a dance class to play for outside of spain??

the only results google yields are for already well established schools who have guitarists already!!!

is it best to maybe target local small scale classes?? how did you other accompanists start out??

i think that's half the point - you play along with the guitarist and learn accompaniment that way, otherwise, how will you know what to play?!

by "sitting in" with people who really knew what they were doing, and playing along

i haven't officially started yet but i went to a show and talked to the dancer after class and asked her if she teaches and if she needs a guitarist.

thanks mark and leo,

I've actually just had an email from a teacher whos class doesn't have a teacher and she said shed love to have me!

my first feeling was "great!!" shortly followed by a tightening of the throat and a tiny fealing of fear! followed shortly after with a sense of excitement.

they dont have a current guitarist so it sounds like I won't have anyone to play along with

asked her if she teaches and if she needs a guitarist.

and what was her answer??

she asked how long i have been playing for and tried to look at my right hand nails. she told me to just come in without a guitar for the first day and talk with the other guitarist and see if it's okay with him. so i did that. the second class, i brought my guitar. the other guitarist was late so i got to play for a cool hour and a half all by myself!

the other dance class, i just emailed the teacher and asked her.

depending on the level of the dance class, you should be able to pick up pretty quickly. if it's a large class, be prepared to break a finger nail or three. when do you start?
