Flamenco and a beer in Amsterdam?

I will be in Amsterdam in a couple of weeks and wonder if there are any good flamenco venues worth catching?

If any of our Dutch friends want to meet up then ik ben het kopen van het bier. I will be staying on Oudezijds Voorburgwal, the slightly quieter end

Hi,

I live in Utrecht and don't know the places to be in Amsterdam as well as some, but it'd be fun to meet up for a beer. When will you be there? I'm probably going to this concert in Amsterdam that Peter mentioned.

Annemarie

ps. Haha Ik ben het kopen van het bier ("I'm buying the beer", I assume? Go Google Translator)

I may not make the concert as I am not sure what we are doing that evening but I will be in Amsterdam on the 19th - you guys want to meet before the concert - say late afternoon?

It's always fun to meet folks from the forum in real life. I'll send you both an email we can sort something out.

p.s. and if the Dutch spoke less English I would have learned more Dutch and not have to use Google - dooee!

I'm planning a trip to a'dam soon too, now that i have an ov student card it is doable (travel for free) train is so damn expensive otherwise...
any places i should definetly visit besides "la guitarra buena" ?

and Escribano when you see a nice looking waitress say to her: "Ga de gij 's ekkes pils vur mijn hoalen" she will be all over you it is a secret southern dutch dialect you cant miss! j/k it doesnt really care what you say i think all dutch like it if someone even tries to speak a bit dutch.
that's why i sometimes like to pretend to be a foreigner in international bar's here, it is fun as long as the real foreigners dont find out

Thanks, I lived on Reguliersgracht for two years and learned about 4 phrases. I can order lots of beer, an uitsmijter, oude kaas, say "please" and "thank you" and ask for the bill or the nearest cash machine. Oh and a "broken coffee".

I have no idea what your phrase means and not sure I am brave enough to try it. Anyway, my pretty Mexicana will be with me

You meet all kinds of interesting folk in Bars IMO.

When I was 20, on the invitation of a couple of Spanish friends, I once went up to "El Bar Inglés" in the (mainly English/ American Ex-Pat) area of Madrid in the North.

These friends were probably even poorer than me, since I had a stash of dough to keep me living on the breadline eating one meal of Judias Blancas con Pan a day for 3 months....(about 150 pesetas, (or £1) including accommodation!).

The beer was very expensive in comparison to usual Madrid prices, but when I was up at the bar ordering a round, a man with a soft Irish accent started to talk to me and we joked a bit over stuff.

Years later I found out he was a very well known Irish writer who broadcast a lot on the BBC.

On the second time I was there, this Spanish guy in his late 20's started talking to me while I was waiting to get the drinks in and was interested in what I was doing in Madrid.

I started talking about Flamenco and guitar and why I enjoyed being in Spain, (which he seemed enthusiastic about), and asked him (as you do) what did he do himself?

He laughed and shrugged his shoulders and had another sip of his whisky and said, "Well, basically I do nothing....I am a member of the Spanish Royal Family.

So, still waiting for the beers to arrive, I asked him what that involved.

He said, "Well....I'll probably sleep till 12 tomorrow...and then get washed and dressed and go to a private bullfight with some friends in the afternoon and then a private party in the evening....

(Actually, he didn't boast about it, but looked rather bored with it all...)

As I said....sometimes you meet interesting people....as I have in London too!

(I tried to have a word with Ronnie Biggs at a posh, but very casual beach-front bar in Rio, but he was well-on and basically ignored me to perform for his adoring fans....the guy was the very worst of English ass-holes you get in Spain, frankly...)

cheers,

Ron

Nah royal family doesnt look as fun to me too, the same as instantly playing like a professional flamenco guitarist, i like the hard work and the adrenaline rush when progress is made.

But yes it's true you meet interesting people, a few week's ago i went to a bar where normaly just dutch people come, i ordered a corona and when i turned away from the bar there was this funny little old mexican fella smiling at me.
He then tried to say in his best english: corona good good! when i looked better i saw that he had brought some of his family with him, i think a brother, 2 sons and 2 daughters maybe even grandaughters i do not know.
I then tried to talk to his family in english, i started a conversation about that i play the guitar, soon i found out that the whole family diddnt really speak english but they all kept smiling and tried to conversate with hands and feet. so did the old mexican he kind of ordered me to dance with one of his daughters with lots of hand and feet and baila!
To make a long story short the mexicana was all over me and the family kept smiling and stuff. but this girl was getting anoying because when i would go to the bathroom she stood there afterwards (infront of the bathroom) grabbing hands and pushing me into the wall so i did what i tought was best for me i decided to run.
Now this bar has moving floors, very slowly the bar and people that stand in front of it turn in rounds so at a certain time i was talking outside the turning area with a friend and about the whole family was at the bar (they did not leave the bar very much) so i said to my friend lets role and we made a run to the nearest coffeeshop, chilled there for a bit and walked randomly in some bar... we ended up at a reggea party with all these rastafari's with their colored hats. i really had fun that eve.
I must admit that i was a little scared for the mexican brothers thats also why i decided it would be better to escape as it was not likely they were legal citizins so i would probably never see them again.

Anyway this was my first experience with a mexican girl and i must say they have very big mouths (maybe not all) but i felt this one was like eating my head:P

Hmm.. never noticed that they had larger than normal mouths. maybe you just felt bite-sized?

Mexicanas do have a reputation for being pescadoras...
