Guitars in sunlight?

Hey folks - So I've heard from various guitar makers, etc., warnings to NEVER EVER USE GUITAR IN DIRECT SUNLIGHT, or something similar. Maybe less strongly capitalized :)

What's behind that? How dangerous is it to, say, play outside in the sun for a bit? Surely this can't be a real issue... right? right???

my assumption is that either the finish will get gucky, the glue joints will soften from the additional heat.....

or that the difference between the increased surface temperature of the outside of the guitar and the relatively acclimatized inside will potentially cause undue stresses on the wood and potentially cause it to warp or crack.

I'd be giving a weird look to any maker who professes something like that. Gypsies of times past made no active effort to avoid playing in the sunny outdoors, so why should we start now? Excessive heat and/or humidity is one thing, but there simply is no harm in sunlight itself. The worst thing that can happen is the guitar gets a tan like the person playing it.

would it actually get hot enough to soften the glue?

kind of risky to try it.

and what about tan lines...

Playing in sunlight is ok just dont leave the guitar in direct sunlight. Especially when its really hot. the wood will want to dry out and cause all kinds of warping. I Once left a brazillian Rosewood back in direct sunlight, wow. The whole thing buckled and twisted. still managed to sort it out with water a weight and the sun again!

I agree with Steve. Playing outdoors is fine. Leaving the guitar in the direct sun though can ruin it though. This isnt so much of a problem in cooler climates but if a guitar gets left near a window with the sun shining brightly thorough it or in a conservatory /glass room or especially inside a car on a hot day it can cause all sorts of problems. Ive seen the finish melted off a good guitar that was left in a glass fronted patio.

Never leave your guitar in a car or near a window or radiator

I once played outside, sitting with my back to the sun so that - I thought - the guitar was in the shade. As it happened there was a small area on the back of the guitar that was in the direct sunlight, and within a few minutes that patch of rosewood had warped into a wave-like shape.

So naturally I say be careful, and keep your guitar out of the sun.

I´ve played my swing around guitar in the sun for years now. No problems.

BUT, I try to sit so that the sun doesnt shine to much on the guitar. Find a good angle. Also, if it has been very humid, be a little bit carefull.

Well turn your heating up to 50 degrees centigrade and sit next to bonfire in the middle of the day...you'll sort of get the idea of what it feels like!!

Oh, that means you only play, like, minor keys and stuff, right?
