Indio Gitano

Hi
I'm not sure this belongs here, but anyway, I'm looking for the palos of:

El Indio Gitano Archivo de Flamenco Vol.17 (Aires Flamencos de Extremadura)
Regar Tu Calle
Por Allá Arribita Vienen
Remedio Pa to los Males
Mal de Amor
Salgo a las Calles

I believe they're Fandangos, Tangos, Bulerias, Seguiriyas, Martinetes.

Is that correct? TIA

Yup. The tangos are closer to jaleos, IMO. Great CD. It sounds like a mono recording, but it's among El Indio's best, and Pedro Peña plays really well, too. They should rerelease some of those recordings he made with singers, especially the one with Cristobalina.

Hi Ed,

Yeah, it's okay. After listening to it a few times I started to like it a bit more than at first, but I still prefer his singing from a few years earlier, when he was in better health. Haven't listened to that recording for some time now. What do you think of it?

It's not easy rounding up all of El Indio's recordings. One of them is a track on a CD of different artists singing in the Madrid bar Candelas. I think the title is "En un ratito."

That Archivo Flamenco disc seems to be out of print, but it’s available as MP3s via Amazon, for those so inclined.

I’ve got a Fontana two-fer comprised of a couple of generically tilted Indio Gitano LPs from ’71 and ’72. Juan Habichuela, Serranito, Escudero, and others on guitar. It’s top-notch, and should be easy to find.

Norman, regarding the Pedro Pena stuff, are you referring to a specific set of recordings? I only know Cristabolina Suarez through Rito Y Geografia, but haven’t heard anything else.

Fontana recently reissued an early 70s La Perrata disc with Pena accompanying. Just showed up in the mail yesterday…..

Yes, but they're scattered across different labels. Most of the early ones are Polydor or Philips.

He recorded with a few different singers up until the early 80s. Just working from memory so I might have my facts wrong, but it looks like he got off to a good start recording with big names like Mairena, Terremoto, Perrate, Piriñaca and Borrico (the last two on the same CD, and they even take turns singing on the same bulería por soleá!), all of whom had died by the early 80s (Perrate was sidelined by a stroke and hung on into the 90s). In addition to El Indio and Cristobalina, I'm sure there are more.

All right, I've got a book in front of me now: He recorded with Fernando el de La Morena and El Funi in 1967, with his brother El Lebrijano and his mother La Perrata in 1970 and 1971, with Piriñaca, Terremoto, El Funi and El Indio in 1971, La Perrata in 1972, El Lebrijano in 1973, Cristobalina in 1974, Diego Clavel in 1976, with his cousin Pedro Bacán in 1978, with Mairena in 1983, with Perrate and Tomasa in 1987, with José el de La Tomasa in 1988, with Sordera in 1997 and with Bernarda in 2003. I'm sure there are more.

On some of the recordings, he's one of several guitarists, so he might just play on a track or two. That recording of Cristobalina is extremely hard to find but is the best of his playing that I've heard so far. The reference is "Sanlúcar, Utrera, Lebrija..." (Acción AC-40.026).

I like the pieces mentioned above and the Soleá de Alcalá "Del manantial de tus labios" with Serranito, but havn't had a chance to listen to the "Naci Gitano" CD, and from what you say I guess I'll skip buying t...

Hi Ed,

I bought it not long ago, at a point in my life where I've got a lot of stuff and am very selective about what I buy nowadays. It's not the first thing I'd want to listen to, but I think it's a good recording to have. Says a lot about the time it was made (1995) and about what happened before and after that point in time. Of course, the music's great, too. Gerardo is too talented not to like. I don't agree with everything he does, but his playing is always interesting and usually pretty exciting.

Don't let me influence you into not buying a recording!!! There are very few that I'd recommend not wasting your time on, and this isn't one of them.
