bulerias dance accompaniment

The dance class that I accompany for has recently been practicing bulerias. I can keep the basic compas without problem however I am not to familiar with dance accompaniment for this palo. Often they switch into patterns of threes or sixes. When they switch to these patterns should I try and match what they are doing rhythmically or stick with the general compas? Is there a general pattern in terms of how the dance is typically structured? Also, does anyone know of any decent youtube videos where I can get some ideas for the bulerias accompaniment?

Hi Guiro,

Do you mean that within one compas the step is divided into two sixes or four threes? If yes I would say, with my dancer's hat on (or dancer's shoes?!) that it doesn't much matter. Sometimes it's more interesting if I do a step in threes that contrasts with the usual compas. That's just part of the funkyness of bulerias. However occasionally I might ask a guitarist to play in a particular way to mirror what I'm doing. So the answer is..... it depends! Hahaha that's not very helpful is it!

I'm sure if the teacher were unhappy she/he would let you know. We dancers are not known for holding back with guitarists
