Manolo Sanlucar - What happened here?

Is it me or is this a problem in the sound? 27:00 onwards, Manolo Sanlucar delivers an awful sounding falseta. Sooo dissonant. The facial expression of a girl sitting behind proves that it did sound awful. Monster players are still human. By the way, who is this girl? Seems like she really enjoys and understands flamenco.

VHS tapes for the win.

Amigo, it was a beautiful and difficult project attempted to restore this amazing series....they had old deteriorating reels to work with. Synchronizing and cleaning up the video was an enormous painstaking task. They did the BEST they possible could with what was available. Maria Vargas also had similar audio problems. Keep in mind the audio reels and the video reels are completely separate and need to be edited to work together like any movie. In the case you point out the audio was compromised there, the physical tape was damaged, the video footage that corresponded was NOT. So that’s why its strange.

About the woman, she is obviously some high roller aficionado and groupie of one or both of these guys. The orgasm faces she makes for Manolo falsetas tell me either he or Morente got lucky that night. The producers had a clear predjudice PRO gitano vs payo and this is yet an other underhanded way to make the payos that do flamenco look bad. Show them with some hoity toity group of “aficionados” that probably don’t know **** about flamenco and would never be allowed near Agujetas’s house, for example.

Anyway I like that the producers did that...they are very clever guys. Anyway in defense of the two payos I have to admit Morente has grown on me of late, if not for anything just his attention to details of vocal melody recreating Chacon letras and such...even if the is not the most natural gifted sounding singer I appreciate his efforts nowadays. Sanlucar stands alone as the only guy in the last flamenco flamenco movie to deliver some real duende, even though he doesn’t believe it exists! . Actually Carpeta brought the duende as well, but only those two.

Thanks for your answer in great detail. I haven't finished watching all the episodes. No doubt, these series are heaven sent to all the aficionados.

While Ricardo’s explanation certainly appears to be plausible, my sources have told me that the surprised looks on the faces of the audience were in recognition of Sanlucar’s subtle musical nod to the legendary surf group “The Trashmen”, who had entered the room at 15:10. While The Trashmen were best known for their smash hit “Surfin’ Bird”, it is no secret the influence their tune “Malagueña” had had on Manolo Sanlucar, if not flamenco, in general.

While not obvious in the video, due to the placements of Morente’s and Sanlucar’s hands, Manolo was playing a modified Ramirez Negra equipped with Bigsby tailpiece that was gifted to him by the band only days before. I suspect the look of delight on the woman’s face was due to her appreciation of the mastery of the whammy bar shown by Manolo within only a couple of day’s of practice.
