Nothing is simple. In 1928, Tomas Pavon recorded a SOLEA, which is known now as a perfect example of solea por bulerias. I think this may be the origin. However, cante is what defines cante, not the guitar. Nowadays s por b (or b por s) have evolved and much of the modern cante is composed for this palo. It is probably from Jerez. However, a good cantaor can sing any palo por any other palo: (eg colombianas por bulerias). I prefer s por b, but call it what you like. It has the same compas as alegrias, but another aire. Sean

I agree with you, Phil. The music and compas is identical. I'm only saying that people choose to call it one or the other name depending on what letra that associate with it - a solea letra or a bulerias letra.

Man, the only answer for this one must be that there is no answer. My teacher, Eduardo Rebollazar, was accompanying for Chocolate and he said that the cante defines it and that SB and BS are exactly the same thing. And my other teacher, whose father is a famous flamenco singer (el naranjito de triana) and who is quite asute with documentation, claims that SB and BS are different. There is no anwser! Some people, some regions, some groups, call it one, others the other, others the same thing.
