"official" rhythm guide

Don't know if anyone's posted this already. This used to part of the website of the Centro Andaluz de Flamenco, or at least there used to be a direct link to it. The singer Calixto Sánchez and the guitarists Pedro Bacán and Manolo Franco recorded some examples of basic rhythm and falsetas for a few styles. Solid basics for beginner to intermediate levels. I think Calixto and one of the Peña boys are both qualified elementary-school teachers, which makes it kind of interesting to see these "official" guidelines (Calixto was also at the helm of the CAF for a few years around 2000).

What do you guys think about the counting for tangos at this website? (In one of the audio files, Calixto counts out the rhythm.) Doesn't make much sense to me.

Great find, Norman. Can't comment much on the Tangos section, but the fandangos material is very helpful. Thanks for sharing.

Aw man, thanks , Norman, This is super cool, and P.Bacan is my fave, so I’m thrilled. I really like that fist sevillanas clip. I knew Pedro Pena was a teacher (I like to think that this accounts for his penchant for sweaters. Dude’s always wearing a sweater!), but I didn’t know C. Sanchez was as well.

Re: the tangos count, I hear him accenting the “dos” much more than the other beats (at first I thought he was saying “doce, quatro, doce, quatro!), is that what you’re referring to? Tangos should be a straight four count with an accent on the first beat, yes?

Yes, but he's not just stressing beat 2, he's starting on it (2-3-4-1). Doesn't seem to mesh when the guitar comes in. I think he's basing the counting on his tanguillos rhythm, which I didn't have a look at. Maybe that's why he's starting on 2.

That's how I count tangos. Accent on first and third beats.

There are some nice falsetas in the fast soleá (I think they call it romance).

Oh, o.k. I hear the starting on the two. I think that’s why I thought he was counting “doce, quatro” at first.

I’m not used to hearing an accent on the three in tangos, so would this be a softer accent than on the one? And how do you tap your foot in tangos? I’ve always just tapped on every beat, but, as mentioned in another thread, I’ve just encountered a farruca tapping approach that just taps the odd beats. Is there a similar approach for tangos?

Thanks,

Adam

Yup, bulerías on the even beats; tientos-tangos on the odd beats; slow and fast soleá rhythms (cantiña, etc.) and siguiriyas on every beat.

That's a-how I do it , there are other ways.

Thanks, Norman. That all makes perfect sense and is very helpful. Well, guess I gotta go re-learn how to tap my 4/4 rhythms.
