Well.. are your talking about jobs or just our hobbys?

A poll would be good, where you can choose between the job and the hobby. I think we have less than 10% guitarrists here. The rest are aficionados or people who just screen the net for free new tabs.... as me in past ...

For example, I wouldnt be mad if edgar calls himself guitarrist. He has regular gigs on big stages as I read. No matter how perfectly someone can play.
Ricardo, Boyes, Duende, Florian, Romerito, Miguel would be a part of the guitarrist-fraction I think.
Well... can you open a poll or tell me how to do this. It would be interesting if everybody would pick honestly.

And if you study or studied guitar but dont work as guitarrist, you are also no guitarrist in my opinion.

.. I just stood up and am a bit mornig-mad... I will get clearer in 2 hours or so....

Really? I would have thought more..... perhaps you're right though, I am fairly new here.

I think you are "morning-mad" (great phrase!)
I also think that is an incorrect statement about only being a guitarist if you are pro.

Zorros question was..... "are we guitarists, singers or dancers".
Since I can't remember the last time I sung or danced and I've been playing the guitar almost every day for 14 years, I think I fall into the guitarist category.

although I just noticed the winking smiley at the end of your post, are you just winding folk up?

I am with Manzmann on this one. I have played guitar for many years, only recently flamenco. I consider myself to be a guitarist even though I do not play infront of a large crowd professionally.

Do ALL philaterlists collect stamps professionally, or do some merely see it as a hobby?

Less than 10% guitarists? I don't think so! This post suggests that figure to be nearer 99% guitarists. The other one is a bartender.

People who play guitar for money to buy food with it are PROFESSIONAL guitarrists.
The others are only guitarrists, or "semi-professional".
But yeah, in everyday language u usually mean with "guitarrist" somebody professional, and only say "he plays guitar" when you want to state that hes an "ameteur".

Well and if people pay you 1 million dollars to see you playing and your playing sukks, then you are in my eyes a cheater, maybe a GOOD cheater, but definitely not a guitarrist.

lol, sorry Doitsujin, I disagree - I really don't think that's a very useful distinction for what Zorro seems (seems) to be asking...I'm not by any stretch a good guitarrist, but I play guitar and dedicate a good deal of time to it, and I don't think it's a crime for me to call myself a guitarrist. I very much doubt if we go by that standard, only 10% of the foro plays guitar. Anyway, add my name to the list of guitarists, if that helps :)

Well. I have still the same opinion. semi-professionell guitarrist? You shurely meant hobby-fiddler...

Well if I just have to spend some time with the guitar to have the right to call me guitarrist no matter how good or bad....... Than Im a taxi-driver coz I allways drove around with my friends, Im a cook, coz I cook very often, Im an informatic coz I use my notebook every day, Im a designer coz I design my apartment, my clothes and all, Im a dolmetcher coz I speak english, german from time to time, Im a barber, coz I shave my hair by myself, Im a medical dr. coz I allways help my self when Im hurt, and Im much more.... Woow.. I would have to spend over 80years of education to get all these titles to have the right to earn money with this.... But you made it so easy. Really nice idea!
Well,... In my opinion "guitarrist" is a name of an education in guitar. But if you dont work as a guitarrist, than you arent one,.. you would be workless or something different. And just fiddeling around for several years doesnt let become you one if you dont perform it.. A bit hard to discribe...
In short: hobby-fiddlers arent guitarrists, no professional ones and no semi-professional ones.

Ok... in some case you are right Deniz. Today I saw a band during a party at the university. They were so ****ing bad. They earn money with their ****. But you are right if you wouldnt call them musicians....

Ok... dont take my comments to hard. Im very tired now...

Just add "professional" or "amateur" (as applicable) in front of the word "guitarist" and the problem is half solved.

A "professional guitarist" is someone who works full-time as a guitarist, and anyone who doesn't is an "amateur guitarist" or at most a "semi-professional guitarist".

The other half is that some "professional guitarists" are more musically qualified than others, but that doesn't matter so much because different genres and styles of music require differing levels of knowledge and ability.

Although I guess if one approaches music from a certain perspective, an academic qualification may be required to call one's self a professional. But does PDL have a degree in Musicology? I doubt it. And he is DEFINITELY a pro!

Jb

PS: I'm a (very) amateur guitarist, and I took my first dance lesson recently.

HEYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY :-) someone did give me a score thank you !!

looking at my comments i realise it can be taken the wrong way..

the fake grill story its a joke, sepparate from the discussion here is not a example of how someone shouldnt call themselfs something they are not. I can see how it can be mistaken for that but i promisse you it wasent, didnt even think about it till i read Doits examples.

Perrsonally i really dont care about who is what, or what they call themselfs or whatever its just silly labels.

I am not sure why we are arguing amongst ourselfs its not brain surgery, is not saving the world lets not make it out more than it is... its just guitar
is it so sacred that you have to earn a black belt in it before you obtain the right to call yourself a guitarist ? and who do you get that from ? UHHHH LOOK OUT ! here comes the GUITAR Jedi please .... give me a brake

Guitarist
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A guitarist is a musician who plays the guitar. Professional guitarists may perform solo pieces or play with ensembles and bands of a wide variety of genres. While with an ensemble, a guitarist can take the role of rhythm (playing with bass in the ensemble) or lead (playing on top of the bass in the ensemble) guitar. Guitarists can accompany themselves on the guitar while singing.

Knowing DOit a litlle, hes probably just enjoying sterring you up.

You could be a good guitarist or a bad guitarist, but you are still a guitarist.

..Or a beginner guitarist, a advanced guitarist, a terrible guitarist, a talented guitarist, a sh*t guitarist, a hopeless guitarist, a grumpy guitarist ( doit .. ) etc..etc.

I am so used to Doit that i love his dark unpolitically correct humour lol, i could never get offended by him, I am such a sucker for his houmor that i would have him offend me more just so i can hear all his jokes. Inside that man lies a dark comedy genius.

I love reading a thread and out of nowhere comes Doit with a comment that offends everybody or makes em cover theyr mouth in shock lol. ( doit remember the gipsy thread and your comment ? ( I knew it was wrong but i loughed my ass off anyway )

I am trying to imagine the first thing DOit would say if he meet Juan M

Doit reminds me of Kramer from Seinfeld a litlle , just says what he wants, no rules, no bending, no suggarcoating

I love you dude ...... just dont ever be honest with me

I agree ... who cares.. and most importantly... who the f..K am I to tell people what they are or what they arent.

quote:

I venture to say that many people who call themselves professionals would crap themselves if Canales called them to accompany him, or if Agujetas ( ) called. Most wouldn't even be able to hang

thats true, but still wouldnt change the fact that this people might be professionals, might earn a living from it.. that would make you a professional.. I guess.

I mean professional dosent mean brilliant, just means doing it as a profession.

Atm. I am casual Professional

Another point to consider is that this is a culture...as such, there are many unknown guitarists who don't make any money but could outplay some professionals.

well yes, welcome to the entertainment bussines how many of the famous people (pop singers, actors, etc) are talented enough to be famous or how many are better than them but are unknowns ? its like that anywhere

how many millionares arent there from computer generated music, from making a track with samples that instead of practicing for it for 20 years you can put it togheder in 4 days if.

Or look at Enrique Iglessias lol, cant even hold a tune.. did you hear the scadal tapes ? ( someone forghot the recorder running in Enriques mic during a concert, while Enrique was lipsinging lol)

yeah life is not fair, but dont expect the untalented people who are succesful feel gulty about beeing lucky and succesfull.

Scenario..

If you the only guitarist in a city outside Spain, and everyone is treathing you like a professional, and paying you like a professional and treating you like a god, but all this time there is way better guitarists than you in Spain not even making a living... .. Sould you be feeling gulty ? I mean you know whats what, and you know what you are and what you arent but should you remind that to everyone that ever pays you a compliment ? (Yeah but dont forghet I am sh*t compared to Spain).
Should you send a money tribute to Spain every month to the talented guitarists fund ?
Sould you find the Spanish phone book on the internet and just call Spanish people at random and appologise to them once a week ?

I mean we all know whats what, and what we are and what we deserve, but noone of us is about to turn it down just because we know theres better people than us in another country. As long as you are not lying to yourself in your head, thats all you can do.

It gets too tiering burdening yourself with this, not to mention takes all the fun out of doing what you are doing.
Yes i am nowhere near as good as some unknown guitarists in Spain, but i spent 11 years of my life preparing for this too, I do wanna get something for it, you do in any other profession where you spent 11 years preparing for it.

HAHAH no no man , i am not taking anytthing wrong, i am just keeping ith the subject, your subject, i am not refering to myself, i dont get treated like a god and i am not the only guitarist in my city.

I just wanna discuss this undiscussed topic, its always in the back of our minds, everytime someone pays us a compliment ( we always think, yeah you should hear the guys in Spain)

u know what i mean ?

You never talk it but its always there, in the back of your head sometimes, u know u think, I get to play At a International Guitar Festival !! but... you know whats out there, you cant help but feel like a fake..( I do anyway lol, i feel like, yeah !! i fouled them )

I am just trying to find whats an apropiate level of guilt, and how does the rest of you cope with it.

every flamenco guitarist playing outside spain that ever got a compliment must have thought this in theyr mind at one time or another.

Just imagine someone walks up to you after a gig and says " - That was Amazing" or whatever..

you say " Thank you " but the first thing that goes into your mind is probably something else
