Zut alors. Reminds me of a title of a Frank Zappa album "zoot allures ".
Now I know it must be abstracted from that french swear.
Or does "zoot"mean anything in english ?

Can you help me out ?

Boral maybe ?

Koella,
It's a pun. Look up "zoot suit" and you'll see.

Thanks Estevan. You must be so right. A zoot suit can be a particular latino suit.
Zappa was in a very latino environment in his youth and did everything to look/be like them. So it makes sense.

I think its a piece originally by Ernesto Lecuona. Simply "Malaguena" or I heard it referred to as "Malaguena Lecuona"

Is that correct those in the know.... (RonM)

Stu,
I for one am definitely not "in the know"...
That's why I come here, to learn off others...

I believe you are right that the original structure comes fron Lecuona, but that the Flamencos like it and generally make up their own interpretations around it.

That's why I don't think anyone will find a "definitive" Tab anywhere.

(Probably as difficult as finding a definitive Tab for Soleares.. )

cheers,

Ron

Hey Kevin,
Thanks for the tip. But - just found out it was last week!
You know Chuscales lived here for a while in the early 80s? I met him and heard him play at a couple of parties, he was a terrific player and seemed to be a nice guy. But I was busy playing non-flamenco music at the time You're lucky to have him as your teacher.

(By the way, are you studying anthro- or ethno- ? I can't remember who's who)

I don't think the flamenco cante "malaguenas"or the guitar solos based on it has anything to do with the Spanish classical composition "Malaguena" by Lecuona. I always thought it was the reverse-that Lecuona based his piece on the cante. Lecuona's piece was written for piano, I think. When a flamenco player is playing a malaguena solo, it's based on the cante. Just like Asturias is more popular than granadinas, Malaguena by Lecuona is much more popular than the flamenco malaguenas. To the point where some flamenco guitarists may quote it in their own malaguenas. That's my understanding but I'm really not all that sure about this ..................................

Ernesto Lecuona was Cuban. I believe his Malagueña was really just based on impressions of flamenco, but is not flamenco itself, although I could be wrong.

People love that song, I am asked to play it, but don't know it :-)

I agree Mark, I was really talking about the guitar solo recognized as "Malagueña", not Malagueñas in general.
I think for my generation, the tune was made popular by Jose Feliciano, though I think he was inspired by Sabicas' interpretation as was Paco and others.

Also it's interesting to note that Paco chose to play it for a largely (ex-pat) Spanish, but not necessarily Flamenco audience, but it appealed to both tastes.

It's a good tune.

cheers,

Ron

Hey koella,

Where I'm from (London) "zoot" is another word for a "Jazzy cigarette" "Which is a another word for a "reefer", Which is another word for......... well you get the idea I hope.

Not sure if this kind of chat is allowed but, on the above subject, what is the intoxicant of choice when playing the guitar?? (If I smoke I can't always play cos its too much of an effort, If I play drunk, I think I'm playing well but actually I'm probably not.....)

RE: What should I play?? (in reply to koella

Thanks Stuart.
I looked it up on the wikipedia. I could have done that before, but I didn't expect it to be there.

But it was ! According to the person who wrote it, it's a pun from "zut alors"
meaning "blimey".

I guess Frankieboy also had the smokable zoot in the back of his head too when he invented the title.

So back on topic, whatever that was.
