A lesson from Paco

A Youtube video, I'm sorry! but none the less a cracking video lesson for many reasons.
Length of nails, picado technique, arpoggio, pulgar etc. Left hand close-ups, right hand close-ups and then the guitar. The set-up, look how close the strings are to the soundboard, look at how thin the ebony fingerboard is.
Lots to observe in this one and clear close up shots.

Tanks for the link! Good old Paco. :.) Isnt it crazy? He played this 30 or 40 years ago and now we leaen from that and see it for the first time..

Anyone else notice all the free strokes in scales in lighter textures.

Picado is always rest stroke ?

It's funny, The Conde Hermanos brothers came up with the Domingo Esteso models and I can assure you that the guitar has the same characteristics...Thin neck, very very low action at the bridge and at the 12th fret. You can tell that the guitars at that time from the Esteso shop were all made with the same idea.

this is from the rito y georgrafia series. buy it and you´ll have lots of old stuff to marvel at.

I remember seeing this for the first time, i was jumping up and down starting to sweat

i got it on VHS and i dont know how many time i rewinded the god damn thing

There is a cleaned up version out now on DVD, I mean CRYSTAL clear and improved audio. The difference in quality really adds to this great documentary, if you are video freak like me. The cante series only, which this is a part of. Vol VIII.

Anyway, there is LOTS of tirando in flamenco, but you have to really dig in and plant good to get the sound. The material from Paco's Fantasia Flamenco -> Fuente y Caudal, and this vid footage, should be like a technique bible for flamenco. I am sorry, but nothing has improved technique wise since Paco started playing like this.

Ricardo, to confirm I'm reading properly... I have the Toque series on DVD (green collection). You sayin they've even cleaned some of that up in a different release? Is all the Paco material from the Green series on this other release you speak of, and is there more stuff? thanks

Conrad , as far as i know there are different series:
1) Rito y Geografia del Toque (4DVDs) - green
2) Rito y Geografia del Cante (Total 26 DVDs) - red
3) Rito y Geografia del Baile (12DVDs) - Blue

Thanks, Arash, I know about that... What I was curious about was Ricardo writing "The cante series only"...

That suggests to me there might be a new version or reissue so soon after the initial release, but perhaps his meaning was merely that it is only the Cante series which has the best quality remasters of these videos. Since I only have the Toque series, I can't check for myself, although I'd say the quality of those are pretty pretty. Furthermore, I know that they overlap and that could be all that he meant. We shall find out.

When you get it, have a close look at the solearesII from Cadiz and Jerez. There´s a solea with one of my favorite singers all time, Manuel Soto Sordera and Parilla which is absolutely awesome (IMO beats the Paco chapter with 10 length, but thats me

)
Also Tio Borrico and Manuel Morao in the same chapter is just real.......

There were people thousands of years ago with fabulous techniques.

Jim's point is great, read about and study, technique/music theory and then look and listen and see how it is actually done. Pretty much if that's, technically, how Paco played it then it is probably the best as he clearly does not stop looking until he finds the right technique and approach for the interpretation that he wants. There is no dogma in his playing all that matters to him is that it works.

The amazing thing about paco's technique isn't it's originality ( that came more in his rhythm and harmony ) no what is stunning about it is his accuracy and the discipline and humility that lead to a way of working that would allow him to be so reliable as a performer.

For me the ultimate lesson would be to stand in the same room as the young Paco and watch him prepare for a concert.

Grisha too has all of these qualities in my opinion not just the talent but the humility and self awareness to develop it.

Obviously Paco did not “teach” anyone in the formal sense, I was told directly from Paco de Malaga who was told by his brother Ramon. Ramon used to learn from Nino Ricardo and was the main teacher of that style to Paco (after initial steps by father Antonio). AFter that Paco never had pupils…however in Busqueda Faru admits Paco told him to practice with a metronome. Right there is the best teacher advice you could imagine. Obviously he taught in the informal sense, everyone he worked with. Canizares and his nephew show the obvious results.

I've never watched Paco giving advice before. At 1:14:15, Paco talks about right hand position. Use youtube's auto-translated captions.
