I played a gig this friday, but i actually prefer playing with friends just because its fun rather than doing gigs. And i dont really regard myself as a solo guitarist, i enjoy playing with singers and dancers and most of my friends are that.

In respond to:
"I played a gig this friday, but i actually prefer playing with friends just because its fun rather than doing gigs."

Yeah, both can be fun. But i dont know anyone, who studies flamenco, makes excersizes hours a day, learns pieces, learns choreographies, does rehearsals, etc. and all that effort, just to play in his living room? Thats a little bit crazy isnt it?
Obviously most people, if not all, do music coz they wanna SHARE their feelings and expressions with other pple. This goes for a 16 year old teeny, who buys an electric just to express himself to others as "cool", as well as for a 38 year old, who studied flamenco more then 20 years! I dont know as what you want to be regarded (i guess not as "cool"), but certainly, there is something, that you also want to share in or better: with flamenco.

Or in other words (maybe this is kind of what you mean): the SOCIAL aspect of music, lies IN the music.

(I didnt intend to label you as cool or uncool, or as a 16-year old! I have to add that these days)

Ill quote myself then if you didnt read it:

I dont really understand what you are saying but i dont play flamenco to be regarded as anything, i play because i love it and i get depressed when i dont.

Sonikete, when playing gigs, the listeners are your audience. When playing with friends, your friends are the audience.
I dont know why you added that you LIKE playing with friends more. Some people might like gigs more, some with friends. Not really interesting.

Sorry man, it wasnt an attack on you . I just wanted to say that if someone plays in front of people he wants to share*. If you play ONLY for yourself, well you play for yourself and the only person to share with is you. But thats obviously not what i was talking about (see 2 lines above).

*) whatever he wants to share with his music.

But its not a passive audience, its socializing with music, so its pretty damn interesting to me.

The problem with playing to audiences here in scandinavia is that they are usually not really capable of enjoying the more subtle things and would rather have you playing gipsy kings covers, and thats why id rather sit and jam with friends.

And to tell you the truth i actually get pretty bored listening to long meaningless guitarsolos, i want all parts to be involved or a very, very good soloist.

Flamenco = Cante

i dont agree sonikete.

Maybe 100 years ago yes. But i think it is time to give "Flamenco Guitar music" its own place and category, also with or without cante/baile.

In my opinion a new language is coined through the unbelievable development of Flamenco Guitar music itself in the past years in the way that you can not just see the guitar as a part of something and just accompaignment of singers/dancers.

There are so many new things, ideas, so much improvement etc. in it that you need to revise your traditional way of thinking. Nowadays you can play/sing/dance only with the guitar! if you know what i mean.

Abother point: i am seriously thinking about mixing flamenco guitar with persian singing because i like it much more that spanish cante (please dont throw me out of the foro because of this comment) .

RE: Sabicas " Guitarists have t... (in reply to Rain

What i mean isnt that you cant be flamenco and a soloist, what i mean is that soloists base their stuff on their knowledge of the singing and sometimes even imitate phrases in their solos. Or as paco puts it "singing with the guitar".

What you have in singing are periods, phrasings and other subtle things that they translate to their guitar solos, and these are things that you cant really put your finger on but clearly separates the soloists that know cante, from the ones that dont. And it hasnt so much to do with nationality as with experience accompanying.

Fusion with persian music sound pretty interesting and i wouldnt mind listening to that, but it would be fusion and it has been done before, maybe not with persian music but with other stuff.

Wow, you guys are getting insane here.

4 pages of this crap??

Another important aspect of being a good musician. Time managment.

Typing doesnt help you accompany dancers.
